Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7961 (KB 5079382) to the Beta Channel, as part of the ongoing build development for Windows 11, version 25H2. The release is distributed via an enablement package, meaning tested improvements are introduced without a full OS installation.
The release brings new features and user experience refinements that, at first, are being rolled out only to Insiders who have turned on the “Get the latest updates as they’re available” toggle in Settings. Over time, those same features will expand to all Beta Channel members. This staged rollout uses Microsoft’s Controlled Feature Rollout technology, allowing the company to gather feedback before a broader release.
A notable new capability is Administrator Protection, designed to safeguard unrestrained administrator privileges. This feature is off by default but can be enabled through Intune using OMA-URI settings or via Group Policy. When active, administrators retain full system control while benefiting from “just-in-time” privilege elevation.
Refinements are also ongoing in the sharing experience, with Microsoft reducing the size of drag tray’s peek view to minimize accidental activation near the top of the screen. For File Explorer, testers will notice the ability to use Voice Typing (via Windows key + H) when renaming files, making file organization more accessible.
Microsoft also eliminated visual distractions in File Explorer: white flashes that had occurred when opening new windows or tabs in “This PC” mode, as well as flashes during UI resizing, have been removed. Improvements to file reliability now make previewing internet-downloaded items faster when they are safely unblocked.
The company reminds Windows Insiders that the Beta Channel carries inherent uncertainty—features previewed may never be finalized, could undergo major changes, or be removed entirely. Additionally, not all features are fully localized at launch; localization continues alongside development. The familiar desktop watermark remains a normal feature of prerelease builds. Those interested in early access from Microsoft can turn on the toggle, but others will receive updates more gradually once features are production-ready. For more details on which build is in each channel, users can consult Microsoft’s Flight Hub.
