What is changing
According to Microsoft Azure, the company is expanding its European footprint to keep up with accelerating cloud and AI demand. New datacenter regions are opening in Austria, Belgium, Denmark (two regions), Greece, and Finland. In the United Kingdom, Microsoft is investing $30 billion from 2025 through 2028, including $15 billion in capital expenditures to grow its datacenter footprint. Microsoft’s global infrastructure now spans more than 80 datacenter regions across 34 countries.
In Sweden, Microsoft is using sustainable datacenter design practices such as free-air cooling, rainwater harvesting, renewable diesel backup power, and a Vattenfall renewable-energy matching partnership. In Italy, Microsoft is partnering with FiberCop to integrate cloud and AI capabilities with nationwide edge infrastructure, targeting lower latency for industrial automation and healthcare scenarios.
Why it matters
This matters most to cloud architects and IT leaders running workloads in Europe. More regional options mean better ability to meet data residency rules, compliance requirements, and latency targets. Organizations that previously had to deploy in distant regions can now run workloads closer to their users.
