Microsoft Releases Windows 11 Beta Channel Update with Security and Accessibility Improvements
Microsoft announced the release of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7752 (KB5074177) to the Beta Channel on June 25, 2024. The update includes a mix of new security tools, language support enhancements, and stability fixes aimed at improving the user experience for testers.
Native Sysmon Security Tool Now Available
A major addition is the integration of built-in Sysmon (System Monitor), a threat-detection tool previously available as a standalone download. This feature allows users to track system events that could indicate security risks using customizable configuration files. Events are logged in Windows’ native event viewer, enabling integration with security applications. Sysmon remains disabled by default and requires manual activation through Settings > System > Optional Features or via PowerShell commands. Users who previously installed Sysmon externally must uninstall it first. Microsoft stated documentation for the tool will be published soon.
Accessibility and Stability Upgrades
The update expands Voice Access to support the Netherlands locale, broadening the tool’s availability for hands-free navigation. Additionally, multiple File Explorer improvements were deployed, including better keyboard navigation, folder renaming fixes, and corrected missing icons in the "Add to favorites" section. Stability issues affecting OneDrive and Dropbox integrations were resolved, addressing app freezes when handling files. Microsoft also fixed a problem causing Outlook setups with PST files stored on OneDrive to hang or reload data unexpectedly.
Controlled Rollout Reminders
Microsoft emphasized that these updates are based on Windows 11 version 25H2 and use Controlled Feature Rollout (CFR) technology. Features are first tested with a subset of Beta Channel Insiders who enable the “Get the latest updates as they are available” toggle under Windows Update. Feedback from this group determines broader releases. The company cautioned that features in testing may never reach general release or could change significantly before launch.
As Beta Channel Insiders begin validating these updates, Microsoft will monitor feedback to refine performance and usability. Future releases may incorporate additional refinements or remove features based on user input.
