What is changing

As announced on the Windows Blog, Windows 11 version 26H2 is rolling out to the Experimental channel through an enablement package. This delivery method means your device updates to the new version with just a single restart, rather than a full, time-consuming operating system reinstallation. The update brings the new features and security enhancements planned for the second half of the year.

Devices already enrolled in the Experimental channel will see the version string update to 26H2 inside Settings > System > About, as well as in the winver dialog box. If you are currently in the Beta channel, you can move to the Experimental channel by navigating to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. You can switch back to the Beta tier at any time.

The current builds for this release cycle are:

Why it matters

This release is important for Windows Insiders who want to test next year’s major update components early. It also allows IT administrators and developers to check application compatibility and plan deployments well ahead of the public release.

The update process is straightforward for regular Experimental users. However, there is an important technical restriction regarding older builds. Windows 11 version 26H2 shares its underlying code core with version 25H2. Because Windows 11 version 26H1 runs on an entirely different core architecture, devices currently on 26H1 cannot upgrade directly to 26H2. Those systems will follow a separate update path to a future Windows release instead.

If you are switching from Beta to Experimental to try this version, the process is fully reversible and will not impact your personal files or applications.
