Microsoft is rolling out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7872 (KB5077231) to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel. This update, built on the Windows 11 25H2 release, is distributed via an enablement package and introduces refinements that focus on usability and visual consistency.
One of the updates is in the File Explorer context menu, where clicking on executable, batch, or command files will now display an icon matching the default app associated with the file. This small change makes the file type clearer at a glance, helping users better understand which application will open the file. Microsoft is inviting feedback on this feature through Feedback Hub, under “File Folders and Online Storage > File Explorer.”
The Settings app has also received updates. A Device info Card previously previewed in other Insider channels is now being refined. This card simplifies key device specifications and improves the flow between the Settings home page and the About page. Microsoft states this version is rolling out now to U.S. testers and will eventually support other regions. Additionally, the System > About page has been updated so that key hardware details such as GPU and storage information appear at the top, alongside copy/paste support for easier sharing. Device-related FAQs are not included yet but may be added in the future.
Taskbar animations for app groups have also been slightly improved. Users who right-click these groups or mouse over them will see smoother transitions, creating a more fluid experience.
These features are distributed using Controlled Feature Rollout technology, starting with a small group of participants. Those who enable Settings > Windows Update > toggle for “Get the latest updates as they are available” will receive features earlier. If left off, the features will arrive gradually over time once deemed stable. Microsoft cautions that some preview features may never ship as final releases, can be altered or removed at any time, and may still be undergoing localization work.
The cumulative update and preview will be available to more Windows Insiders over the coming weeks, with eventual public release when features are finalized. Those interested in the broader rollout schedule or channel details can visit the Windows Flight Hub and submit feedback through the Feedback Hub app.
