Microsoft Releases New Windows 11 Canary Build with Fixes and Warnings
Microsoft announced the release of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1546 to the Canary Channel, targeting early adopters testing unreleased features. The update includes minor improvements and a fix for app issues when working with files on OneDrive or Dropbox. Microsoft clarified that a desktop watermark displaying the incorrect build number will be resolved in a future update.
The company emphasized that Canary Channel builds represent unstable platform changes in the earliest stages of development. These builds should not be viewed as tied to a specific future Windows release. Features in these builds may never become official, as Microsoft uses them to test concepts and gather feedback. Some functionalities might be altered, removed entirely, or appear only in later Windows updates if deemed ready.
Microsoft highlighted that many features in the Canary Channel are gradually rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology. This begins with a small group of Insiders before expanding, allowing Microsoft to monitor feedback and stability. The company noted that some features could appear in the more stable Dev or Beta Channels before reaching Canary users, reflecting the experimental nature of the channel.
Unlocalized features are common in early builds, Microsoft said, and improvements to language support will arrive as updates stabilize. Insiders are encouraged to report localization issues through the Feedback Hub. Microsoft also reiterated that the desktop watermark on pre-release builds is intentional and expected.
Leaving the Canary Channel will require a clean install of Windows 11—users cannot simply switch to a channel with lower-numbered builds due to technical limitations. Microsoft directs Insiders to its Flight Hub page for details on build distribution across channels.
The latest release underscores Microsoft’s focus on refining Windows through Insider feedback. While the Canary Channel offers a glimpse into potential future updates, its high-risk, unstable nature means features remain subject to change or cancellation. Insiders continue to play a critical role in shaping Windows’ evolution as Microsoft balances innovation with reliability.
