Nioh 3 drops you into a brutal alternate Warring States Japan where samurai, bandits, and yokai all want you dead. You switch between Samurai Style and Ninja Style on the fly, managing stamina, reading enemy patterns, and building a character around how you like to fight. Each zone pushes you to adapt. Sloppy play gets punished fast.
The dual combat system is what sets this one apart. Samurai Style is heavy and direct. Ninja Style is quick and tactical. The split-second decision of which style to use mid-fight is where most encounters are won or lost. Yokai enemies each follow a readable pattern once you have spent enough time studying them.
This is the third game in the Nioh series. It supports online co-op, so you can bring in another player when a boss has you stuck. Nioh 3 launched on February 5, 2026, and runs on Windows 11 only.

What is Nioh 3?
Nioh 3 is a dark samurai action RPG developed and published by KOEI TECMO. It launched February 5, 2026 on Steam for Windows 11 and is the third entry in the Nioh series. The game is set in an alternate Warring States Japan, where you fight through human opponents and yokai drawn from Japanese mythology.
The combat is built around two distinct styles. Samurai Style is direct: heavy attacks, strong guard, and punishing counterattacks. Ninja Style is tactical: fast movement, fake attacks, and techniques that reward reading enemy behavior. Both styles have their own skill trees. You switch between them during combat based on what a situation demands.
Online co-op lets you bring in a second player for any section of the game. This is most useful on boss encounters that are blocking your progress, but co-op is available at any point during the campaign.

Key Gameplay Features
โ๏ธDual Combat System
Samurai Style hits hard and holds ground. Ninja Style moves fast and attacks when an enemy leaves a gap. Both have full skill trees and switching between them mid-fight is the core skill the game teaches.
๐นYokai and Human Enemies
Human enemies follow predictable patterns. Yokai do not. Each yokai type has unique move sets and weak points drawn from Japanese mythology. Learning them is what keeps each zone fresh across multiple runs.
๐บ๏ธOpen Field Exploration
Nioh 3 opens up the map structure with branching open fields. Optional encounters and environmental hazards give you room to explore before committing to harder routes or boss zones.
๐คOnline Co-op
Call in one other player to join your session at any point. Co-op works through standard Steam matchmaking and does not require anything beyond an internet connection.
๐Deep Character Builds
Skills, equipment, and stat allocations let you specialize heavily in one style or build a hybrid. Builds do not lock in early, so there is room to change direction as you understand the game better.
๐ฅ๏ธFrame Generation Support
Nioh 3 supports frame generation for compatible GPUs. This lets your GPU display more frames than it could on its own, making motion look smoother without needing a hardware upgrade.
๐ค Is This Game for You?
โ You Will Love It If:
- You enjoy hard action RPGs with deep build options
- You like combat that rewards pattern recognition and adaptation
- You played Nioh 1 or 2 and want to continue the series
- You want co-op support in a soulslike-style game
โ You Might Not If:
- You want a relaxed experience or lighter difficulty
- You prefer a large open world over focused zones
- You are still on Windows 10 and not planning to upgrade
- You want a story-heavy, narrative-first RPG
๐ฎ Our Take
Nioh 3 delivers tighter, more technical combat than earlier entries in the series, and the build depth gives you a lot to work with. The dual style system forces you to stay engaged in every fight, and the yokai encounter design keeps things from feeling routine. Adding co-op to the formula makes the harder sections more manageable without removing what makes the game work.
The Windows 11 requirement is worth checking before you buy. If you are on Windows 10, the game will not run. At $69.99 for Standard or $109.99 for Digital Deluxe, the value depends on whether the season pass DLC interests you. For fans of the genre, the base game alone gives you a substantial amount of content.
๐ฅ๏ธ Why Play on PC?
- Controller and Keyboard Support: Nioh 3 supports both input methods. A controller is a natural fit for the combat system, but keyboard and mouse work for players who prefer them.
- Frame Generation: PC supports frame generation, which means compatible GPUs can push smoother frame rates beyond raw hardware limits. The recommended spec targets 1080p at 60fps on Standard preset.
- Steam Features: Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud saves, Steam Trading Cards, and Family Sharing are all supported.
- SSD Required: KOEI TECMO specifically states that gameplay performance degrades on a slow SSD. Install on your fastest drive for the intended experience.
