uTorrent is a free torrent app for Windows, available from the official uTorrent website. It downloads large files in small pieces from many people at once, so big downloads keep going even when one source is slow. The free version shows ads.
uTorrent comes in two Windows versions that look nothing alike. Classic is the small desktop program people have used for years, and Web runs inside your browser with a video player built in. Both are made by BitTorrent, the company behind the torrent system itself.
The download is only a few megabytes, and it runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

What Is uTorrent?
uTorrent is a torrent client: an app that downloads files through BitTorrent, a way of sharing files between many computers at once. Instead of pulling a file from one server, it grabs pieces from everyone who already has it, then shares the pieces you have with others.
To start a download you open a .torrent file (a tiny file that describes the download) or a magnet link (a web link that does the same job). uTorrent does not host or search for files itself. You find the torrent somewhere else, and uTorrent does the downloading.
It started in 2005 as a tiny program by developer Ludvig Strigeus and is now owned by BitTorrent. Lots of legal content travels this way: Linux system images, game patches, open-source software and public domain films.
uTorrent Classic vs uTorrent Web
uTorrent’s site offers two Windows apps and a browser-only tool. They share a name, but they suit different people.
uTorrent Classic
The original desktop program. It handles many torrents at once and has deep settings: speed limits, a scheduler, RSS feeds and remote access. Pick Classic if you download lots of files and like control.
uTorrent Web
Installs a small helper and opens in your browser. It is built around a video player, so you can start watching a video while it downloads. Pick Web if you mostly download videos and want it simple.

There is also uTorrent Lite. It is a page at lite.utorrent.com where you paste a magnet link and stream it in the browser with nothing installed. Handy for one video, not for keeping files.
Key Features of uTorrent Classic
Classic is the version most people mean when they say uTorrent. These are the tools that set it apart from a basic downloader.
Many downloads at once
Add as many torrents as you like and manage them from one list. Queueing settings decide how many run at the same time, so the rest wait their turn.
Speed limits
Cap how much of your upload and download speed uTorrent uses, so browsing, gaming and video calls stay smooth while it works.
Scheduler
Pick the hours uTorrent runs at full speed, slows down, seeds only or stops. Useful if your internet plan is cheaper or quieter overnight.
Remote access
Add torrents to your home PC from a phone or any web browser, as long as the PC is on and uTorrent is running.
RSS downloads
Point uTorrent at an RSS feed (a list a website updates with new items) and it can grab new releases on its own, either everything or only titles you pick.
Auto shutdown
Tell uTorrent to quit, sleep or shut down the PC when your downloads finish, so you can leave a big download running overnight.
How to Install uTorrent on Windows
These steps are for uTorrent Classic. The Web version installs the same way from its own download button.
1 Open the uTorrent download page at utorrent.com/downloads/win.
2 Click Free Download under uTorrent Classic and save the installer.
3 Run the installer and click Next through the welcome screens.
4 Click Decline on every partner offer. The installer suggests other apps you do not need.
5 Finish and open uTorrent, then add a .torrent file or paste a magnet link.
Only download it from utorrent.com. Search results are full of “uTorrent Pro free” and cracked copies. Those are where real malware hides, and they are never the real app.
uTorrent Free vs Paid Plans
The free version downloads without speed or size limits. Paying mostly removes ads and adds a virus scanner for downloads. Each paid plan is a yearly subscription and covers either Classic or Web, so pick the one for the version you use.

uTorrent vs qBittorrent
qBittorrent is the free alternative most people compare uTorrent with. It has no ads, no partner offers and no paid tier, and its code is open for anyone to check. Here is how the two line up.
Our take
uTorrent does the job, and Web is the easiest way to watch a video torrent as it downloads. For plain downloading, though, qBittorrent does the same work with no ads and nothing to decline, so it is where we would send most new users. Is uTorrent Safe?
The official uTorrent is not a virus, but Microsoft treats it as a potentially unwanted app. That is Microsoft’s label for software that shows ads or offers to install other programs. Microsoft’s own definition says such apps are not malware, but can slow a PC down or bring in software you did not ask for.
If potentially unwanted app blocking is turned on in Windows Security, it can stop the uTorrent installer or move it to quarantine. The warning starts with PUA:. Turning off your antivirus to get around it is a bad trade. If you still want uTorrent, open Windows Security, go to Protection history, and allow that one item.
The bigger risk is not the app but the files. A torrent can contain anything, so download only from sources you trust, and scan anything that ends in .exe before you run it. Malwarebytes or Windows Security will both do.
Tips for Getting Started
1 Set an upload limit first. Open Options, then Preferences, then Bandwidth. A modest upload cap keeps the rest of your internet usable.
2 Pick a download folder. Under Preferences, then Directories, choose where finished files go so they do not pile up in Downloads.
3 Check the seeds before you start. The Seeds/Peers column shows how many people share a file. More seeds usually means a faster, healthier download.
4 Leave it seeding for a while. Seeding means sharing the pieces you have. It keeps the torrent alive for the next person.
5 Use Auto Shutdown for overnight downloads. Under Options, set uTorrent to shut down the PC when everything finishes.
Common uTorrent Problems and Fixes
Windows Security blocks the installer
This is the potentially unwanted app warning covered above. Download again from utorrent.com, then allow the item in Protection history, or use qBittorrent instead.
Download stuck at 0%
The torrent may have no seeds left. Check the Seeds/Peers column. If it shows zero, nobody is sharing it and no setting will fix that.
Downloads are slow
Open Preferences, then Connection, and make sure UPnP port mapping is ticked so other computers can reach yours. Also check you have not set a download limit by mistake.
Ads in the side panel
The free version shows them. The Ad-Free plan removes them, or uTorrent Lite streams with no ads at all.
