How to Choose a Gaming Desktop
Start with the graphics card
The graphics card decides how well games run more than anything else. An RTX 5060 is fine for 1080p, an RTX 5070 is the sweet spot for 1440p, and an RTX 5070 Ti or 5080 is for high refresh rates and 4K.
Get 16GB of memory, or 32GB if you stream
16GB is the minimum for new games. 32GB helps if you stream, record or keep a lot open while you play. Most towers have free slots, so you can add more later.
Plan for storage
New games often take 100GB or more each. A 1TB SSD holds a handful of them. Adding a second SSD is one of the easiest upgrades on a desktop.
Match your monitor
A fast PC on a slow screen is wasted money. Pair a 1440p desktop with a 144Hz or faster monitor. Test it on a demanding game such as Cyberpunk 2077 or Battlefield 6.
Older Desktops We Removed
Earlier versions of this list included the ASUS ROG G16CH, CyberPowerPC Gamer Master with a Radeon RX 6400, Panorama Gaming PC, Corsair Vengeance i7500, Alienware Aurora R16, Lenovo Legion Tower 7i Gen 8 and Skytech Omega. Most used older processors or RTX 40 series graphics, so we replaced them with current models sold by Amazon.
Gaming Desktops FAQ
Is it cheaper to build a gaming PC than to buy one?
Not always. Memory and graphics card prices have risen, and big makers buy parts in bulk, so a prebuilt desktop often costs about the same as the parts alone. Building still makes sense if you enjoy it or want to pick every part yourself. Buying gets you one warranty for the whole machine.
Can I upgrade a prebuilt gaming desktop later?
Usually, yes. Full-size towers such as the Legion Tower 5, Acer Nitro 85 and OMEN MAX 45L take standard memory, SSDs and graphics cards. Check that the power supply can handle a bigger graphics card first. Mini PCs like the ROG NUC 16 let you add memory and storage, but not a new graphics card.
Do these gaming desktops come with Windows 11?
Yes. Every pick ships with Windows 11 already installed. Most come with Windows 11 Home, while the ASUS ROG G700 and HP OMEN MAX 45L come with Windows 11 Pro.
Should I buy a gaming desktop or a gaming laptop?
Buy a desktop if it will stay on one desk. You get more speed for the money, it runs quieter, and it is easier to upgrade. Buy a laptop if you need to move it. Our best gaming laptops guide covers the laptop side.
