HPE Enhances Hybrid Mesh Security

HPE Bolsters Firewalls with AI Management as Threats Evolve

At the RSA Conference 2024, tech giant Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced a major update to its security products. The company is adding new features to its Juniper Networking hybrid mesh firewalls specifically designed to tackle the growing security problems caused by artificial intelligence.

The core problem is simple: AI tools are now everywhere. Employees use public AI chatbots for work, and AI is being built into everyday business applications. At the same time, hackers are using AI to make their attacks, like ransomware, smarter and faster. This creates a double-layer of risk that traditional firewalls aren’t built to handle.

“AI is everywhere, from chatbot sites to embedded applications, making it imperative for organizations to be able to deliver consistent and secure access,” explained Eve-Marie Lanza, a senior security manager at HPE.

The new AI management controls give IT teams three key new abilities:

  1. See which AI applications are being used on the company network.
  2. Block access to risky or unapproved AI websites.
  3. Filter and control data by scanning keywords and managing what files users can upload to AI tools.

These controls are part of a bigger picture: creating a unified security fabric. This means the same security rules and policies follow a user or a critical workload (like a Windows Server or an Azure cloud app), no matter where that user or workload is located.

“Hybrid mesh firewalls provide unified, multiform‑factor firewall security, giving organizations consistent policy, visibility, and enforcement across on‑premises, cloud, and remote environments,” Lanza stated. For a company using Windows Server in a data center, Azure in the cloud, and having staff work from home, this means the security policy for a sensitive application is the same everywhere. This closes dangerous security gaps and makes management less complex.

This unified system is managed through HPE’s Juniper Security Director platform. A major new enhancement here is an AI-powered chatbot. It allows any IT operator—not just a security expert—to ask questions in plain language and get help. Examples include: "Provision a firewall for our Azure cloud deployment" or "Create a rule that lets our sales team access the CRM app from the office during work hours." This simplifies daily tasks and makes advanced security more accessible.

The new AI features run on the latest version of Junos OS and are supported across HPE’s SRX firewall family. For businesses with smaller or branch locations, HPE also introduced the new SRX400 series. These are smaller, high-performance appliances that bring the “carrier-grade” security features (like stronger threat detection and better networking) previously only found in larger, more expensive models to branch offices, retail stores, or campus sites.

The new SRX440 model and all the AI control features are scheduled for general release in the second quarter of 2024.

For organizations invested in the Microsoft ecosystem, this news is highly relevant. The promise of a single policy following a workload directly supports hybrid and multicloud strategies built on Azure and Windows Server. It offers a way to enforce consistent security for Microsoft-based applications whether they run in a private data center, as virtual machines, or as cloud-native services in Azure. Furthermore, the simplified management via the chatbot aligns with the industry-wide push, led by companies like Microsoft, to reduce operational complexity through intelligent, automated tools. As AI continues to reshape both business tools and cyber threats, having a firewall system that can consciously manage AI usage itself is becoming a critical layer of defense for modern IT environments.
