Microsoft Enhances Security with Secure Password Deployment in Edge for Business

In an effort to address the longstanding issue of insecure password sharing in organizations, Microsoft has announced the general availability of secure password deployment in Microsoft Edge for Business. This enterprise-grade solution aims to bolster security and streamline access for employees, all at no extra cost to existing subscribers.

The Problem and the Solution
Many organizations struggle with employees sharing passwords via unsecured methods, such as sticky notes or emails. This practice exposes sensitive credentials to unintended recipients, increasing the risk of misuse. Microsoft Edge for Business now offers a secure alternative, enabling administrators to deploy encrypted shared passwords to designated user groups within their organization. This feature ensures that users can seamlessly log into websites without compromising security.

How It Works
The secure password deployment feature is integrated into the Microsoft Edge management service, accessible through the Microsoft 365 admin center. Administrators can configure and manage browser settings using configuration policies. From within these policies, admins can deploy encrypted passwords to specific user groups. The process leverages the familiar Autofill experience, providing a streamlined interface for adding, updating, or revoking credentials as needed.

End-User Experience and Security
When a password is shared with an end-user, it appears in their Edge password manager, ready for autofill on the corresponding website. These admin-deployed passwords are accessible only within Edge and cannot be viewed, edited, or deleted (unless permitted by the website). They automatically appear in the work profile on managed Windows devices, ensuring a seamless and secure login experience. However, Microsoft notes that motivated users might attempt to use developer tools to reveal passwords, recommending the restriction of access to these tools through the DeveloperToolsAvailability policy.

Encryption and Compliance
The secure password deployment feature integrates with the Microsoft Information Protection SDK, enabling identity-bound encryption. This ensures that encrypted credentials can only be accessed by authenticated users within the organization. The encryption is tied to Entra identities, automatically enforcing access based on organizational policies without requiring manual key management or additional infrastructure. This integration aligns with Zero Trust principles and compliance requirements, safeguarding sensitive information from configuration to endpoint consumption.

Getting Started
To begin using secure password deployment, administrators can navigate to the Edge management service in the Microsoft 365 admin center. The feature is accessible through the Customization Settings tab and the Secure password deployment page. Eligible subscriptions include Microsoft 365 Business Premium, E3, and E5, with the Edge admin or Global admin role required. As Edge for Business continues to innovate, this feature represents a significant step towards enhancing security in modern organizations. By adopting secure password deployment, businesses can move towards a safer digital environment, mitigating the risks associated with insecure password sharing practices.
