Microsoft has rolled out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1673 to the Canary Channel, bringing a series of feature updates to early testers. The update includes new emoji from the Emoji 16.0 release, offering a small, thoughtfully curated selection that carries timeless symbolism and practical versatility.

For enterprise users and IT administrators, the update introduces enhancements to Windows Backup for Organizations, enabling the first-sign-in restore experience on Microsoft Entra hybrid-joined devices, Cloud PCs, and multi-user environments. This capability helps maintain consistency when refreshing, upgrading, or migrating devices. Quick Machine Recovery now activates automatically on enterprise-managed Windows Professional devices and those not domain-joined, extending Windows Home-level recovery features to a broader range of devices. Domain-joined devices will continue to keep this feature disabled unless activated by the organization. The update also marks the addition of Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) support for Windows 11 Arm64, allowing IT administrators to install tools such as Active Directory, Group Policy Management, DNS, and DHCP utilities through Settings or Control Panel.

Consumers will notice improvements in everyday usability as well. A built-in network speed test is now accessible from the taskbar, either through Wi-Fi or Cellular Quick Settings or by right-clicking the system tray network icon. This tool measures Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and cellular connections, helping users diagnose and troubleshoot network performance. New options in the account menu simplify management by directing users to the benefits page, and pan and tilt controls for compatible cameras have been added in the Settings app under Bluetooth & Devices > Cameras. Widgets open as full-page experiences rather than dialog boxes, and taskbar search results now show group name counts and offer result previews for faster browsing.

Microsoft is also refining user interface consistency and reliability. The dark mode experience in File Explorer has been improved, with updated Folder Options dialogs, and a previously reported issue that caused File Explorer windows to jump to the Desktop has been fixed. Bluetooth device wheel configuration and Nearby Sharing reliability have been enhanced, especially for sharing larger files.

Microsoft reminds Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel that many features are gradually rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology. Users may notice some features first appearing in other Insider channels before they reach Canary. As with all pre-release builds, a desktop watermark is visible at the lower right corner, and localization for some features may be incomplete during early development. Microsoft encourages feedback through the Feedback Hub and reminds insiders that moving off the Canary Channel will require a clean installation of Windows 11, due to technical requirements related to feature rollout.

Windows Insiders can check Microsoft’s Flight Hub to see the current build status for each Insider channel and are encouraged to continue sharing feedback as the software moves through development.
