  • Microsoft launches SQLCon 2026 in Atlanta to unite SQL and Fabric communities.
  • A new savings plan offers up to 35% off on Azure database services with a one-year commitment.
  • Database Hub in Fabric provides unified management across Microsoft’s database portfolio, now in early access.

SQLCon 2026 has begun in Atlanta, marking the return of a Microsoft-led SQL community event. According to the announcement, the conference creates a unique opportunity for learning and sharing across the Microsoft databases portfolio. Microsoft says, “It is not just about new technology, but about reconnecting with each other and building the future of SQL together.”

Azure SQL Migration and AI Integration

Azure SQL is positioned as the migration path from on-premises SQL Server to the cloud. Microsoft states that Azure SQL is fully SQL compatible and delivers low latency, built on a consistent foundation from on-premises to cloud. GitHub Copilot integration in SSMS provides AI assistance for T-SQL tasks, helping developers and DBAs write, edit, and refactor code more confidently.

New Savings Plan for Databases

A savings plan for databases allows customers to commit to a fixed hourly spend for one year, saving up to 35% versus pay-as-you-go. Microsoft says the plan is designed for evolving database environments, with savings automatically applied to high-value usage each hour. The post notes that actual savings may vary based on location, service, and usage patterns.

Hyperscale and AI Enhancements

Azure SQL Database Hyperscale supports cloud-native AI applications with elastic scale and HTAP isolation, avoiding complex redesigns. Microsoft highlights better price-performance and elastic scale, with new features like the SQL MCP Server for AI agent connectivity. Vector indexes have been improved to stay current in real time, using quantization for faster, more predictable search results.

SQL Database in Fabric Progress

SQL database in Fabric now includes enterprise security features such as Auditing and Customer-Managed Keys, generally available. Vector indexing enhancements from Hyperscale are integrated, ensuring consistent capabilities across the portfolio. The Migration Assistant, with Copilot assistance, simplifies moving to Fabric by assessing readiness and migrating data while preserving familiar SQL workflows.

Database Hub Unifies Management

The Database Hub, in early access, provides a unified view for managing databases across edge, cloud, and Fabric. It supports Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, and other services. Microsoft describes it as offering a unified database management experience with agent-assisted reasoning and Copilot-powered insights, helping teams govern and optimize their estate from a single control plane.

SQLCon 2026 will also take place in Barcelona from September 28 to October 1, 2026. Microsoft emphasizes its long-term commitment to SQL, with investments aimed at shaping the future of databases for migration, AI, and data unification across edge, PaaS, and SaaS environments.
