LTO capacity shipments surged 57% year over year in Q1 2026, and the LTO Program reported 160.3 exabytes of compressed tape capacity shipped in 2025, making it the second-largest year on record despite a 9% drop from 2024.
The tape cartridges hold 30TB to 250TB when compressed, and large libraries use robotic arms to load and unload dozens or hundreds of cartridges. Tape media consumes no power while idle at rest in storage, and they offer air gap security because the tape is physically disconnected from any network during long-term archival.
