Microsoft announced the release of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27971 to the Canary Channel, a development channel that provides early access to new features and updates. The latest build introduces several new features and fixes various issues reported by Windows Insiders. One of the key features of this build is the extension of the Notification Center to secondary monitors. This means that users can now see their calendar and a bigger clock with seconds on any monitor by clicking the date and time in the system tray of their taskbar.

The build also fixes several issues, including a problem with File Explorer that caused it to crash when transferring files to a network drive. Additionally, an issue with the lock and login screens that prevented media controls from displaying has been resolved. Microsoft has also fixed an underlying issue related to microsoft.ink.dll and relevant APIs, which could result in pen and handwriting not working correctly in apps or app crashes. Furthermore, an issue impacting the ability to start Hyper-V virtual machines with Trusted Platform Module (TPM) on ARM64 devices has been fixed.

However, some known issues still exist in this build. For example, Settings may crash when accessing drive information under Settings > System > Storage. Additionally, Insiders with the new Start menu may experience it unexpectedly scrolling to the top. Microsoft is also investigating reports that sleep and shutdown aren’t working correctly for some Insiders after the latest Canary builds.

Microsoft reminds Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel that the builds released to this channel represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows. Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as Microsoft tries out different concepts and gets feedback. Some features may change over time, be removed, or replaced, and never get released beyond Windows Insiders.

To get the most out of the Canary Channel, Microsoft recommends that Insiders check out Flight Hub for a complete look at what build is in which Insider channel. Additionally, Insiders can report any issues they encounter with localization to Microsoft via Feedback Hub. As a reminder, Insiders can’t switch to a channel that is receiving builds with lower build numbers without doing a clean installation of Windows 11. The desktop watermark shown at the lower right corner of the desktop is normal for these pre-release builds.
