Micron Unveils Next-Gen SSDs for AI Data Centers, Including Groundbreaking PCIe Gen6 Drive

Micron Technology has launched a powerful new range of solid-state drives (SSDs) aimed at powering the future of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. These drives are made to handle the massive amounts of data used by cloud services like Microsoft Azure, as well as Windows Server environments that need fast, reliable storage.

The highlight of this launch is the Micron 9650 PCIe Gen6 SSD, the company’s fastest drive yet. It is built on Micron’s latest NAND9 architecture and is said to be the first SSD to fully support PCIe Gen6, the newest and fastest data transfer standard available. This makes it especially important for AI training and real-time AI inference tasks—like chatbots or automated agents used by companies running Microsoft Azure or AI-integrated Windows Server systems.

The 9650 SSD can read data at speeds of up to 28 GBps and write at up to 14 GBps. It can also handle up to 5.5 million input/output operations per second (IOPS) for random reads, which helps reduce delays and improve performance in data-heavy setups.

Micron says the 9650 is FIPS 140-3 Level 2 certified and TAA compliant, making it safe for U.S. government and enterprise use. There’s also a liquid-cooled E1.S version designed for dense server setups where heat is a concern.

PCIe Gen6 is a big leap forward. It offers double the speed of PCIe Gen5, sending data at up to 64 GBps per lane. This benefits GPUs like Nvidia’s new Blackwell, which already support PCIe Gen6. This improved speed helps feed data faster to AI models, reducing delays and improving performance.

Alongside the 9650, Micron also introduced two other new SSDs. The 6600 ION SSD packs up to 122TB of storage in a single drive and is great for large AI data lakes in enterprise Windows Server or cloud environments. The 7600 PCIe Gen5 SSD is meant for servers that need balanced performance and low latency, making it useful for everyday enterprise and cloud tasks.

While these drives offer exciting new features, full PCIe Gen6 adoption might take time. So far, only the latest Nvidia GPUs support it directly. Most CPUs and motherboards won’t have full support until late 2025 or later.

Micron’s move signals strong competition in the storage market, especially with players like Samsung and SK Hynix already offering fast drives. But with the 9650, Micron is aiming to stay ahead of the curve—especially as AI computing continues to grow in importance for Microsoft Azure, Windows Server, and enterprise cloud systems.
