Windrose is a pirate survival co-op game for PC from Kraken Express, available on Steam and Epic Games. You sail an open sea between randomly generated islands, gather resources, build a base on land, craft your gear, and fight your way through dungeons and bosses. The whole loop is built to work solo or with up to 8 players at once.

The combat is what sets it apart from most survival games. On land you dodge and block attacks in real time, while ship fights feel like Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag with direct steering and cannon fire. Both systems sit inside the crafting and base building loop rather than feeling like separate modes.

Windrose entered Early Access on April 14, 2026 for Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is built on Unreal Engine 5. The game sold over one million copies in its first six days and holds a Very Positive rating on Steam.

What is Windrose?

Windrose is a pirate survival co-op game developed and self-published by Kraken Express, an independent studio based in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. It launched in Early Access on April 14, 2026. You play in an alternate Age of Piracy where you sail between islands, gather materials, craft weapons and tools, build a base, and fight enemies both on foot and at sea. The island layout is randomly generated each time you start a new world, so no two runs share the same map.

The game runs on Unreal Engine 5 and is the studio’s debut release. Windrose sold over one million copies in its first six days on sale and peaked at over 200,000 players online at the same time, putting it among the biggest Early Access launches of 2026. Reviews hold at Very Positive across most regions.

At Early Access launch, the game shipped with 3 world zones (each with its own enemies and resources), over 30 randomly generated islands, more than 90 hand-crafted locations to explore, 3 playable ships, a full building system with multiple styles, crafting and upgrading, character progression with stats and talents, and hired workers you can station at your base. The developers have confirmed the price will go up when the full game releases.

Key Features

⚔️Real Combat on Land

On land you fight with precise dodges and timed blocks rather than button mashing. Enemies signal their attacks clearly so you can learn patterns and hit back at the right moment. It rewards patience more than spam.

🚢Naval Combat and Boarding

You steer your ship directly, fire cannons at enemy vessels, use repair kits mid-fight, and board enemy ships after disabling them. The feel is close to Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, straightforward to pick up but fun across long sessions.

🏝️A World That Changes Every Run

The sea map generates a new layout each time you start. Islands fall into one of 3 world zones, each with its own enemies, resources, and bosses. Over 90 hand-crafted locations are scattered across those islands, so there is always something new to find.

🔨Base Building and Crafting

You build a permanent base on land to store resources, craft gear, and prepare for longer voyages. Multiple building styles are available. Crafting is not optional padding: the gear you make determines whether you survive the next island tier.

👥Solo or Up to 8 Co-op

The game is fully playable offline on your own or with up to 8 friends at once. You can host the game yourself or use a dedicated server. There is no player-vs-player combat. The only enemies are the ones in the world.

Three Ships to Master

The Ketch is quick and easy to handle for new players. The Brig gives balanced firepower and crew room for boarding. The Frigate is the late-game ship built for sustained boss fights. You unlock them through progression, not a paywall.

🤔 Is This Game for You?

✅ You Will Love It If:

  • You enjoy survival games but want actual combat depth, not just stat grinding
  • Pirates and naval exploration interest you more than fantasy or sci-fi
  • You have a regular group of friends who want co-op without fighting each other
  • You like Black Flag-style ship combat mixed with on-foot dungeon fights

❌ You Might Not If:

  • You want a finished game with no Early Access rough edges
  • You prefer player-vs-player or competitive multiplayer
  • Timed blocking and dodging sounds frustrating rather than fun
  • Your graphics card is below the GTX 1080 Ti level

🎮 Our Take

Windrose is the best pirate survival game on PC right now, and the Early Access launch proves the team knows what they are doing. The ship combat is immediately fun, the land fighting has real depth once you get the timing down, and the co-op loop is one of the better ones in the survival genre. A million copies sold in six days is not luck.

If you enjoy survival games with friends and have ever wanted a pirate setting done properly, this is worth buying now. The price will go up at full release. If you prefer waiting for finished games, bookmark it and check back in 12 months.

System Requirements

Windrose runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Requirements are not final during Early Access. An SSD is strongly recommended for the best experience.

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K / AMD Ryzen 7 2700X
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti / AMD RX 6800

  • RAM: 32 GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080 / AMD RX 6800 XT

5 Tips for Your First Voyage

Windrose has a lot going on from the start. These habits will save you time and frustration in the first few hours.

1

Start with the Ketch and learn it well

The Ketch is fast and forgiving for new sailors. Do not rush to upgrade to a bigger ship. Spend your first few islands getting comfortable with how ship steering, cannon angles, and repair kits work before you take on harder sea fights.

2

Build your base before pushing to the next zone

The Coastal Jungle starting zone gives you 15 to 20 hours of content. Use that time to build proper storage, get a crafting setup running, and hire workers for your base. Going into the Cursed Marshes without decent gear and a stocked base is a quick way to lose progress.

3

Learn to parry, do not just dodge everything

Dodging every attack drains your stamina fast. Blocking at the right moment breaks the enemy’s guard and opens them up for a free hit. It takes a little practice but once the timing clicks it is much more efficient than rolling away constantly. Try it on weaker enemies in the starting zone before you take on stronger ones.

4

Stock gunpowder before every naval fight

Running out of cannon ammunition mid-fight against a boss ship is a common early mistake. Gunpowder is craftable and not expensive, but you burn through it faster than you expect. Keep a stockpile in your ship hold before sailing toward marked enemy vessels.

5

Explore every point of interest on each island

The 90+ hand-crafted locations scattered across islands contain chests, blueprints, and materials you cannot get from regular gathering. Rushing to the next island without checking these spots means missing gear that makes harder zones significantly easier.
