Counter-Strike 2 is a free tactical shooter for PC from Valve, available on Steam.
Two teams of five fight over bomb plants, defuses, or hostage rescues across short rounds, with no respawns until the next round starts. Every gunfight rewards aim, map knowledge, and using grenades at the right moment over fast reflexes alone.
The Source 2 engine is what sets this apart from the version most longtime players grew up on. Counter-Strike 2 rebuilt every map with dynamic smoke grenades that react to bullets, fire, and the environment in real time. Outside of that, the core gunplay and economy system that made the series an esports staple for over two decades carries forward unchanged.
Counter-Strike 2 released as a free upgrade to CS:GO in September 2023 for Windows 10 and Windows 11 through Steam. It is played with mouse and keyboard, with no official controller support.

How to Download Counter-Strike 2 on Windows
Counter-Strike 2 is free on Steam. You need a free Steam account and 85GB of storage space.
- Step 1. Download and install Steam if you do not have it yet. It is free.
- Step 2. Open Steam and sign in. Create a free account if you do not have one.
- Step 3. Search for Counter-Strike 2 in the Steam store, or go directly to the store page.
- Step 4. Click Play Game. There is no purchase step since the game is free.
- Step 5. Wait for the install to finish. You need at least 85GB of free storage, and an SSD is recommended to avoid texture loading stutters mid-match.
- Step 6. Launch the game and run through the built-in aim and movement tutorial if you are new to the series.
- Step 7. Play casual modes or Deathmatch right away. If you want ranked Competitive or Premier, buy the one-time Prime Status upgrade first.

Prime Status and Ranked Modes
Counter-Strike 2 is free, but ranked play sits behind a one-time upgrade. Prime Status costs $14.99 on Steam and unlocks Competitive and Premier, the two ranked modes with skill-based matchmaking. Prime also moves you into a matchmaking pool with fewer cheaters and smurfs (experienced players using fresh accounts to face weaker opponents), and makes you eligible for weekly item and case drops. Check the latest price and any bundled offers on the Steam store page before buying.
| Mode | What It Offers |
|---|---|
| Premier | Both teams take turns banning maps until one is left to play on, plus a hidden skill score (called CS Rating) that adjusts after every match. This is the closest mode to real competitive esports play. Requires Prime Status. |
| Competitive | The traditional rank system with skill groups, fixed maps chosen by the server, and shorter matches than Premier. Requires Prime Status. |
| Casual and Deathmatch | Free for everyone, no Prime required. Casual is a relaxed bomb defusal mode, while Deathmatch is a free-for-all aim warm-up with no objectives. |
| Wingman and Community Servers | Wingman is a 2v2 mode on smaller maps. Community servers run custom modes like surf, retake, and deathmatch variants built by the community. |
What Is Counter-Strike 2?
Counter-Strike 2 is Valve’s rebuild of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on the Source 2 engine, the same engine family behind Half-Life: Alyx. Two teams of five, Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists, play short rounds built around planting or defusing a bomb, with a handful of other objective modes in rotation. There are no respawns mid-round, so every death matters, and your team’s in-game economy (the money you earn from rounds and kills, spent on guns and gear) carries real weight into the next round.
The headline change from CS:GO is the new smoke grenade system. Smokes in Counter-Strike 2 are dynamic, reacting to gunfire, fire, and the map’s geometry in real time instead of sitting as a flat static cloud. Every classic and competitive map was rebuilt for the new engine with sharper lighting and textures, and the Premier mode introduced a hidden skill score called CS Rating on top of the familiar rank ladder.
Counter-Strike 2 released in September 2023 as a free upgrade for anyone who already owned CS:GO, and as a free download for new players. The PC version runs through Steam and uses Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) to police both casual and ranked play.

Key Features
Dynamic Smoke Grenades
Smokes react to gunfire, fire, and the environment in real time, opening up new tactics for clearing or holding bombsites that did not exist in earlier games.
Premier Mode and CS Rating
Compete in matches where both teams ban maps until one is left, with a hidden skill score (CS Rating) that adjusts after every game, plus global and regional leaderboards to track where you stand.
Rebuilt Maps
Classic maps like Mirage, Inferno, Dust II, and Nuke were rebuilt from the ground up with sharper textures, improved lighting, and small layout tweaks.
Weapon Skins and Trading
Every weapon skin and cosmetic item from CS:GO carries forward into Counter-Strike 2. Trade items with other players or sell them on the Steam Community Market.
Real-Time Anti-Cheat
Valve Anti-Cheat now flags suspicious behavior during a match rather than only after it ends, with regular updates aimed at catching hardware-level cheats.
Community Workshop

🎮 Our Take
Counter-Strike 2 took a series with two decades of history and modernized it without losing what made it work. The Source 2 engine, dynamic smokes, and rebuilt maps make the game feel current without changing the core gunplay that longtime players already know. Reception has been strong overall, though the cheating problem and ongoing anti-cheat updates remain a real pain point that Valve keeps pushing patches to address.
If you are new to tactical shooters, start in casual and Deathmatch to learn the maps and gunplay before spending anything. If you already know the series from CS:GO, the move over is seamless and your skins carry forward. If competitive integrity and cheaters are a dealbreaker for you, know that Valve has shipped real-time detection improvements, but no anti-cheat catches everything.
📝 I was one of the best in the world at this game
I played the original Counter-Strike daily for years, going all the way back to its beta days when I was still in elementary school. I kept at it long enough to become one of the best players in the world at one point. My go-to loadout was a Desert Eagle, full armor, and an AWP sniper rifle, no camping, just hiding behind boxes and doors. That Deagle was not a joke. Seeing the series carry that same core feel into Counter-Strike 2, two decades later, says a lot about how well Valve built this game in the first place.
System Requirements
Tips for Getting Started
Practice Against Bots Before Going Online
Start a private match against bots to learn map layouts, grenade lineups, and basic recoil control without the pressure of real opponents watching your every move.
Play Casual and Deathmatch First
Neither mode requires Prime Status. Use them to build muscle memory for aim and movement before risking a rank in Competitive or Premier.
Learn Sound Cues Early
Footsteps, reloads, and weapon switches all carry through walls and floors. A good headset and turning up game audio matters more than most other settings combined.
Buy Prime Status Once You Are Ready to Rank Up
Wait until you are comfortable with basic gunplay before spending on Prime. It is a one-time cost, so there is no rush, and a few hours of free practice first makes ranked matches less frustrating.
Communicate With Your Team
Calling out enemy positions and remaining utility wins more rounds than solo plays. Use voice chat or quick text callouts, even in casual modes.
