Slay the Spire 2 is a roguelike card game for PC from Mega Crit, available now on Steam. You build a deck from scratch each run, fight turn-based encounters, and try to reach the top of a procedurally generated spire. Every card offer, every relic, and every path choice is yours to make.

The catch: if you die before completing your run, you start over with nothing. No saved progress. No carried cards. The next run gives you a different map, different card offers, and different enemies. You get better by learning what works and what does not.

The sequel adds co-op for up to 4 players (new to the series), two new characters, and a deeper lore system. It was released on March 5, 2026, in Early Access, and runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Card game battle - Slay the Spire 2 for PC: Gameplay, Tips & Full Guide (2026)

What is Slay the Spire 2?

Slay the Spire 2 is the sequel to Mega Crit’s 2019 hit roguelike deckbuilder. After 1,000 years dormant, the Spire has reopened. Each run, you choose a character, build a deck from scratch by picking cards after each combat, and fight your way to the top of a procedurally generated tower.

No two runs play the same. The cards you are offered, the enemies you face, the relics you find, and the path you choose all change with every attempt. When you die, you start over with a fresh deck. The goal is to figure out what works, learn the systems, and climb further each time.

The sequel brings five playable characters (three returning from the original, two new), a new co-op mode for up to 4 players, new enemies, new relics, and a lore system built around discoverable timeline fragments. The core loop is the same, but there is meaningfully more to explore.

Key Gameplay Features

๐ŸƒBuild Your Deck As You Go

You start each run with a basic deck and add cards by winning fights. Every choice shapes how your run plays out. No two decks end up the same.

๐Ÿ‘ฅCo-op for Up to 4 Players

New to the series. You and up to three friends can climb the spire together. Each player controls their own character and deck, and you share the same run.

๐Ÿง™Five Playable Characters

Three returning characters from the original game with updated card sets, and two new characters with entirely different mechanics. Each one demands a different approach.

๐ŸบRelics Change Everything

Relics are passive items collected throughout a run. They shift your strategy, buff your cards, or change the rules of combat entirely. Getting the right relic at the right time can carry a run.

๐Ÿ”€No Two Runs Are the Same

The map layout, card offers, shop stock, and enemies are all procedurally generated. What worked last run may not work this time.

๐Ÿ“œDiscoverable Lore

Timeline fragments and character backstories are scattered throughout runs. The story rewards players who explore and pay attention, but it never gets in the way of the gameplay loop.

๐Ÿค” Is This Game for You?

โœ… You Will Love It If:

  • You enjoy strategic thinking and building systems
  • You liked the original Slay the Spire
  • You want a game with hundreds of hours of replayability
  • You want to play co-op with friends

โŒ You Might Not If:

  • You want a finished, fully complete game right now
  • You prefer real-time action over turn-based strategy
  • You want a strong narrative-driven experience
  • You find card game systems frustrating to learn

๐ŸŽฎ Our Take

Slay the Spire 2 does exactly what a good sequel should. The foundation is the same tight deckbuilding loop that made the original one of the most-played games on Steam, and the additions (co-op, new characters, deeper lore) all make sense. At $24.99 in Early Access, it is already worth the price for fans of the genre.

New players can start here without any knowledge of the original. The game teaches you through failure, and that is by design. The 97% positive rating from 16,000 reviewers says more than any description can.

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Why Play on PC?

  • Mouse Precision: Card selection, map navigation, and reading enemy intent are all faster and more comfortable with a mouse than a controller.
  • Active Mod Community: The original Slay the Spire has one of the largest modding communities of any indie game on PC. New characters, cards, and mechanics from the community are already appearing for the sequel.
  • Steam Co-op: Playing co-op through Steam with friends on PC is straightforward. Invite from your friends list and start climbing.
  • Runs Well on Older Hardware: The minimum spec is a dual-core CPU and 4GB RAM. It runs on laptops and older desktops that cannot handle modern AAA titles.
Character choice - Slay the Spire 2 for PC: Gameplay, Tips & Full Guide (2026)Character choice from Slay the Spire 2 for PC

5 Tips for Beginners

The first few runs will feel random. These habits make the game click faster.

1. Keep your deck small

A deck of 15 to 20 cards will draw the cards you need more often than a bloated 40-card deck. Every card you add has a cost. Be selective.

2. Learn when to skip a card

Not every card offer is worth taking. Skipping is always an option. Adding a card that does not fit your current strategy makes your deck worse, not better.

3. Read what relics do before taking them

Some relics look powerful but have trade-offs that can ruin an unprepared deck. Read the description carefully and think about how it interacts with your cards before picking it up.

4. Upgrade your key cards first

At the Blacksmith, focus on upgrading the cards your strategy depends on. One upgraded core card does more work than three mediocre upgrades spread across filler.

5. Build around your energy count

You have 3 energy per turn by default. Build your deck so your most important plays cost 1 to 2 energy each, not 3. High-cost cards are powerful but easy to get stuck holding in your hand.

System Requirements

Slay the Spire 2 runs on a wide range of hardware, including older laptops.

Component Minimum Recommended
OS Windows 10 (64-bit) Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit)
CPU Dual-core 2.0 GHz Quad-core 3.0 GHz
RAM 4 GB 8 GB
GPU 1GB VRAM (integrated graphics supported) Dedicated GPU, 2GB VRAM

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Slay the Spire 2 finished?

No. Slay the Spire 2 launched in Early Access on March 5, 2026. The developer estimates 1 to 2 years in Early Access before the full release. More content, game modes, and a true ending are still being added. What is available now is already substantial and highly rated.

Can I play without having played Slay the Spire 1?

Yes. Slay the Spire 2 is a standalone game. You do not need any knowledge of the original to enjoy it. Returning players will recognise familiar characters and mechanics, but new players can jump in without any background.

Does Slay the Spire 2 have multiplayer?

Yes. Slay the Spire 2 supports co-op for up to 4 players. Solo play is also fully supported. This is new to the series: the original Slay the Spire was single-player only.

Who are the playable characters in Slay the Spire 2?

There are five playable characters. Three are returning characters from the original game with updated abilities, and two are new additions with unique card sets and playstyles.

Is Slay the Spire 2 hard for beginners?

It has a learning curve. The first few runs will feel random. The game teaches you through failure rather than tutorials.
