Grand Theft Auto V is an open-world crime game for PC from Rockstar North, available on Steam, Epic Games, and the Rockstar Games Launcher.
You play three criminals, a street hustler, a retired bank robber, and a loose cannon with a short temper, and switch between them to pull off heists across the fictional city of Los Santos and the county around it. Buying the game also unlocks GTA Online, Rockstar’s ongoing multiplayer mode for up to 30 players.
Today, Steam only sells the game as Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced, a free upgrade Rockstar built for modern PCs. Buying Enhanced also unlocks Grand Theft Auto V Legacy, the original 2015 PC version, at no extra cost. Legacy still matters, since it is the version most of the biggest PC mods, including the well-known police mod LSPDFR, were built for.
Grand Theft Auto V originally released on consoles in 2013, with the PC version following on April 14, 2015. Enhanced added ray tracing, DLSS and FSR support, and faster loading through DirectStorage on March 4, 2025. It runs on Windows 10 and 11, with mouse and keyboard as the default control scheme and partial controller support.

What You Need to Know
- Steam, Epic Games, and the Rockstar Games Launcher only sell Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced now. Buying it also gives you the older Legacy version for free.
- GTA Online is included in the same purchase. There is no separate multiplayer game to buy.
- PC has the deepest mod scene of any GTA V platform, including full police, graphics, and vehicle overhauls, but mods only work in Story Mode, never in GTA Online.

How to Download GTA V on WindowsPC
Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced is sold on Steam, Epic Games, and directly through the Rockstar Games Launcher, all at the same price. Whichever store you buy through, the game still installs the Rockstar Games Launcher, since that handles your Rockstar account, GTA Online, and verifying you own the game.
- Step 1. Go to the Steam page or the Epic Games Store page and click Buy or Get.
- Step 2. Sign in to your Steam or Epic account, or create one for free.
- Step 3. Install the Rockstar Games Launcher when prompted, then sign in to or create a free Rockstar Games account. This step is required no matter which store you bought through.
- Step 4. Wait for the 105GB download. An SSD (a faster type of storage than a traditional hard drive) is required, not just recommended.
- Step 5. If you already own GTA V Legacy, run the one-time migration tool to bring your Story Mode save and GTA Online character across to Enhanced.
- Step 6. Launch the game and choose Story Mode or GTA Online from the main menu.

What Is Grand Theft Auto V?
Grand Theft Auto V is an open-world action game (a game where you move freely through a large map instead of following a fixed level order) set in the fictional city of Los Santos and the county surrounding it.
You control three protagonists, Michael, Franklin, and Trevor, and switch between them at any time, including mid-heist, to pull off jobs from different angles.
Outside the story, GTA Online drops you and up to 29 other players into the same map to build a criminal empire through businesses, heists, and races. Rockstar has released more than 40 free content updates for GTA Online since 2013, and Enhanced bundles all of them in from the start, no separate downloads required.
The game runs on Rockstar’s RAGE engine, the same in-house engine behind Red Dead Redemption 2. Enhanced adds ray tracing (a lighting technique that simulates how light actually bounces off surfaces) along with DLSS and FSR upscaling, both of which boost frame rate by rendering at a lower resolution and sharpening the image back up.

🎮 Our Take
Grand Theft Auto V’s Story Mode has not changed in over a decade, and Enhanced does not pretend otherwise. What Rockstar actually rebuilt is the delivery system: better visuals, faster loading, and a version of GTA Online that can keep running smoothly until GTA 6 arrives. That is a reasonable trade if you care about GTA Online, less so if you only wanted a new single-player story.
If you have never played GTA V or want to sink real hours into GTA Online before GTA 6 lands, buy Enhanced now, you get ray tracing and DLSS plus a free copy of Legacy in the same purchase. If mods are the real draw, install Legacy alongside it, since that is still where the deepest mod scene lives while Enhanced support catches up. If your PC cannot hit the 8GB RAM and SSD minimum, Boosteroid lets you stream your copy instead.
Why Play GTA V on PC?
The biggest reason to play GTA V on PC instead of console is mods. Nothing on PlayStation or Xbox comes close to what the PC community has built over more than a decade. Here are five of the mods still worth installing.

Tips for Getting Started
Run the migration before you start a new save
If you already own Legacy, migrate your existing progress to Enhanced first. It is one-time only and cannot be redone later.
Try First Person Mode for driving and shooting
It takes some getting used to, but many players find it sharper for aiming and more immersive for exploring the map.
Pick one Career Builder business and stick with it
GTA Online throws a lot at new players. Focus on one business (Biker, Executive, Nightclub, or Gunrunner) before branching out.
Back up your save before installing mods
Story Mode mods are generally safe, but a bad install can still corrupt a save. Copy your save folder first.
Use the Rockstar Editor to save your best moments
Chaotic GTA Online moments happen fast. The built-in editor lets you capture and export clips before you forget them.
