Microsoft is overhauling Windows Search to help users move faster from finding files to completing actions. The updated experience rebuilds the search engine on a modern software foundation, significantly reducing resource overhead while simplifying how results appear. This initial release is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders testing preview builds.
What Changes in the Rebuilt Windows Search
The core update switches the search interface to WinUI 3. This framework modernization removes legacy UI baggage, letting the search window open instantly when you press the Windows key or click the taskbar search bar. It also curbs background memory usage during active indexing tasks.
Visually, Microsoft dropped the split preview pane in favor of a clean, unified single-column list. Telemetry showed that the vast majority of clicks occur in the primary results list, rendering the separate side preview unnecessary for quick daily lookups.
Key functional enhancements include:
- Typo tolerance and synonym handling: Forgiving keyword matching surfaces files even with slight misspellings or alternative phrasing.
- Inline quick previews: File metadata and web answer snippets display directly within the result row.
- Direct system actions: Type system commands (like turning on Wi-Fi or adjusting volume) to trigger direct toggles immediately.
Rollout Details and How to Enable
General users running production builds of Windows 11 will not receive this overhaul immediately. Microsoft is collecting performance data from preview rings, with plans to expand the refreshed search interface to the general Start menu in upcoming updates.
If you are a member of the Windows Insider Program running Build 26340.9616 or higher, you can test it directly. The preview currently supports English only.
To enable the experience:
- Open Settings on your Windows PC.
- Navigate to Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Feature flags.
- Toggle the search modernization flag to on, then restart your session.
If you encounter rendering issues or performance hitches, file diagnostic logs via Feedback Hub under Desktop Environment > Search.
