Cairn is a survival-climbing game for PC from The Game Bakers, available on Steam. You play as Aava, a climber trying to be the first person to reach the top of Mount Kami. You plan your own route, decide where to climb, and manage everything you carry. There is no set path and no second chance if you run out of gear.

The resource system is what makes the climbing tense. Running out of the wrong thing at the wrong height ends your attempt. You carry pitons, chalk, finger tape, food, water, and medicine, and running short on any of them forces a hard choice fast.

It launched January 29, 2026 and runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11. If you have played Furi or Haven, this is from the same studio. A controller is recommended, but keyboard and mouse are fully supported.

Walking on river pond - Cairn for PC: Gameplay, Tips & Full Guide (2026)

What is Cairn?

Cairn is a survival-climber developed and published by The Game Bakers, the studio behind Furi and Haven. It launched January 29, 2026 on Steam for Windows 10 and Windows 11. You play as Aava, a professional climber attempting the first ascent of Mount Kami, a peak no one has ever summited.

The mountain has no set path. You choose your own route across the entire face, deciding when to push higher and when to hold back. Climbing mechanics are physical and deliberate: hand placement, balance, and effort all factor in. A careless move causes a fall. A smart move opens the next section of rock.

Survival is built into every decision. Pitons anchor your rope and protect your fall, but you only carry so many. Chalk improves grip. Finger tape handles cuts. Food and water keep you moving. Running out of any of these at the wrong moment forces a retreat or ends the attempt. Bivouac camps (temporary rest spots you set up on the mountain) let you recover before pushing into harder sections above.

How it looks like climbing in bad weather

Key Gameplay Features

๐Ÿง—Realistic Climbing Mechanics

Hand and foot placement, balance management, and physical effort all feed into every move. The mechanics are designed to feel like actual climbing, with falls as a real consequence of misjudgment.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธOpen Route Planning

The entire mountain is open to climb. You choose where to go, how steep to climb, and which hazards to avoid. Route planning is a core skill. Committing to the wrong section without the right gear will force you back.

๐ŸŽ’Resource Management

Pitons, chalk, finger tape, food, water, and medicine all deplete as you climb. Each resource serves a specific purpose. Managing what you carry and when to use it is where most runs are won or lost.

๐Ÿ“–Narrative-Driven Story

Aava’s climb is more than a physical challenge. The story explores what she is willing to sacrifice to reach the summit. Characters you meet on the mountain add context and weight to the journey.

โš™๏ธAdjustable Difficulty

Cairn includes adjustable difficulty settings and a “Playable without Timed Input” option. You can tune the challenge without changing the story or cutting content. There is also a save-anywhere feature.

๐ŸŽตSoundtrack by Limbo Composers

The score is composed by the team behind Limbo and Inside. It plays a key role in building the tension and atmosphere of the mountain. The full soundtrack is available as a separate purchase on Steam.

๐Ÿค” Is This Game for You?

โœ… You Will Love It If:

  • You enjoy slow, deliberate games that reward careful thinking
  • You like survival mechanics tied to a physical challenge
  • You want a story-driven indie with strong writing
  • You prefer a game you can save and return to at your own pace

โŒ You Might Not If:

  • You want fast-paced action or combat
  • You find resource management frustrating
  • You prefer multiplayer or co-op experiences
  • You want a large open world to explore freely

๐ŸŽฎ Our Take

Cairn is one of the more focused games released in 2026. The climbing mechanics feel earned rather than abstract, and the resource system keeps you thinking even on sections that look straightforward. The Game Bakers built something that plays differently from most action games on PC. That focus carries through to the story, which gives the summit a reason to matter beyond the mechanics.

At $29.99 for the base game, the price is fair for what you get. The Deluxe Edition adds the Upgrade Pack for $6.89 more than buying separately, which is a reasonable deal if the extras interest you. If you have already played PEAK or are considering it, The Summit Bundle on Steam saves money on both.

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ Why Play on PC?

  • Controller and Keyboard Support: A controller is recommended for the climbing mechanics, but keyboard and mouse are fully supported. Both input methods work from the main menu through the credits.
  • Save Anytime: Cairn supports saving at any point. You can play in short sessions without losing progress, which suits the methodical pace of the game.
  • Low Spec Requirements: The minimum GPU requirement goes back to 2016 hardware. You do not need a high-end PC to run Cairn at a solid frame rate.
  • Steam Features: Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud saves, and Family Sharing are all supported.

5 Tips for Your First Climb

Cairn rewards patience. These habits will help you get further on your first run.

1. Look ahead before you move

Scan the rock above you before committing to a direction. Dead ends and overhangs that look passable from below often are not. A few seconds of reading the route saves a long retreat.

2. Place pitons before hard sections, not during them

Pitons protect your fall distance. Placing one before a difficult section costs a piton but keeps a fall from undoing a large stretch of progress. Saving pitons for later is only smart if you have already anchored the section you are on.

3. Check your supplies before each major push

Open your inventory and assess what you have left before committing to a long section away from a bivouac. Running out of food or water mid-section with no camp nearby forces a dangerous retreat.

4. Use bivouac camps to recover, not just to sleep

Bivouac camps restore your condition and give you time to plan the next section. Setting one up before you feel desperate is better than waiting until you are already low on health or resources.

5. Adjust the difficulty if you stop having fun

Cairn’s difficulty settings let you tune the challenge at any time. Lowering it does not cut content or skip the story. If a section is blocking your progress and frustration is replacing engagement, adjust the settings and keep climbing.
