Enshrouded is a survival action RPG for PC from Keen Games, available on Steam. You explore a fallen kingdom, gather and craft, build a base and fight back the Shroud, a deadly fog that covers the land. You can play alone or in online co-op with up to 15 friends.

The building is what sets it apart. The whole world is made of voxels (small blocks), so you can dig, reshape the land and build anything, anywhere. A cottage carved into a mountain and a castle on a cliff are both fair game.

It entered Early Access on January 24, 2024, and the full 1.0 release came out on October 15, 2026, for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. It plays with mouse and keyboard or a controller, and it is Steam Deck Verified.

What Is Enshrouded?

Enshrouded puts you in the role of a Flameborn, the last hope of the fallen kingdom of Embervale. You start with almost nothing, then hunt, farm, mine and craft your way up. Rescued survivors move into your base and unlock new recipes and gear.

Your base grows as you rescue survivors, and you can build it almost anywhere.

The Shroud is the main threat. It is a toxic fog that sits in valleys and ruins, and you can only stay inside it for a short time. The rarest materials and the toughest enemies are found inside the Shroud, so every trip in is a risk.

There are no fixed classes. You spend skill points in a large skill tree and can mix a warrior, a ranger and a mage however you like. A grappling hook and a glider let you cross the map in ways a road never could.

The skill tree lets you mix melee, ranged and magic builds.

What the Full 1.0 Release Added

Version 1.0, released on October 15, 2026, ended Early Access. It was the biggest update the game has had. If you played before, these are the changes that matter most.

The full map

Cinder’s Cradle, a new northern region of lava fields and floating islands, plus new areas at the edges of the older biomes and two new Hollow Halls (big group dungeons).

The end of the story

The main quest now has an ending, and quests are split into main and side quests.

Higher level cap

Players can reach level 50 and gear can go to level 55, with more Flame Altars per world.

Mage overhaul

Nine new spell types, eternal spells that never run out of charges, summoned skeletons and new wand attacks.

Sparkworks

A logic system for levers, pressure plates, doors and traps, so you can build puzzles, dungeons and arenas.

Looks and sound

A new renderer that keeps distant buildings detailed, HDR support, and voiced lore notes and survivors in English, German and Mandarin.

The Adventure Sharing browser in Enshrouded, showing popular, most downloaded and new player-made worlds to play

Adventure Sharing lets you upload your world and play worlds other players built.

Building got smaller wins too. A new skill lets you build while flying freely, storage chests can be upgraded in place, and you can rename map markers and chests. You can also switch to more realistic character proportions at the Barber.

With the free-flying build skill, tall builds like this are much easier to finish.

Our Take

🎮 Our Take

The building is the reason to play. No other survival game on PC gives you this much freedom to shape the land, and the Shroud gives exploring a real sense of risk. The full release fixes the biggest gap from Early Access: the story now has an ending and the map is complete. The combat is fine rather than great, and the early hours still lean on gathering and crafting, which will not suit everyone.

If you have a few friends who like building, buy it now: it is at its best with a group sharing one world. If you play alone and mostly want combat, look at a straight action RPG instead. If you played in Early Access, start a new character, because the early game and the world changed enough to be worth seeing fresh.

System Requirements

These are the requirements Keen Games lists on Steam. Even the minimum asks for 16 GB of RAM, which is the part older PCs most often miss.

The first launch after an update or a new graphics driver compiles shaders (prepares the graphics for your card), which takes a minute or two. An SSD helps a lot when the world streams in as you glide. If your PC falls short, our Best Gaming Desktops guide is a good place to start.

Tips for Beginners

1

Place your Flame Altar first

The Flame Altar claims your base area and is where you respawn. Build inside its range so your work is protected.

2

Rescue survivors early

The blacksmith, hunter, alchemist and the others each unlock a new set of recipes. Follow the quests that lead to them.

3

Watch your Shroud timer

A timer runs while you are in the fog. Get out before it ends, and upgrade your Flame to stay inside longer.

4

Eat before a fight

Food buffs raise your health, stamina and mana. Keep a few different meals on your action bar.

5

Build a glider early

The glider turns long walks into quick flights from any high point, and it is the fastest way to explore.

Best Enshrouded Mods to Start With

Enshrouded has no official mod support, but fans share mods on Nexus Mods. Most of them were made for Early Access, so check that a mod has been updated for 1.0 before you install it. These two are a good place to start.

One tool with over 20 settings, such as bigger stack sizes, more building space and regrowing crops. It works on your own game and on a dedicated server, and a Steam file check undoes it.

Thins out the fog inside the Shroud so you can see further. It only changes how the game looks on your PC, so it does not affect other players.

These two use different loaders and should not be installed together. Back up your save folder before you add any mod, and remove mods before you report a bug to Keen. In co-op, the host’s server settings win, so ask before you join a modded world.
