Key Points
• Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1685 to the Canary Channel, featuring improvements to storage cleanup and new voice typing in File Explorer.
• Both new features are being delivered gradually using Control Feature Rollout technology, so not all users will see them immediately.
• Windows Insiders who want to leave the Canary Channel must perform a clean installation of Windows 11, as switching channels with lower builds is not supported.

Microsoft has begun distributing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 28020.1685 to participants in the Canary Channel, marking another step in the company’s ongoing testing pipeline. This build includes two significant updates, both being deployed selectively through the company’s feature rollout system.

Windows Insiders will notice improved reliability when removing Windows Update-related clutter and leftover installation files through the Settings > System > Storage menu. This enhancement aims to make cleanup smoother and more dependable for users clearing space on their devices. Additionally, Microsoft has added voice typing functionality to File Explorer. Now, users can press the Windows key plus H to activate voice input when renaming files, bringing a hands-free option to a task that previously required manual typing.

Microsoft is using Control Feature Rollout technology to deliver these improvements methodically. That means a subset of eligible Windows Insiders will receive the features first, and as the company monitors system performance and user feedback, broader rollout will occur. This approach is part of the Canary Channel’s core purpose: to test updates in a controlled way before they are more widely available.

The Canary Channel also remains as a preview ground for Windows features that may appear early in other Insider channels, such as Dev or Beta, before later arriving in Canary. However, because features here are under active development, localization is not always complete. Users encountering out-of-sync translations can submit reports via the Feedback Hub for future refinement.

For those considering a move away from the Canary Channel, Microsoft reminded insiders that switching to a build with a lower version number requires a clean install of Windows 11. This technical limitation prevents issues during the change of Windows Insider program channels. Also, only those in the Canary Channel will see the small desktop watermark in the lower-right corner, a normal indicator of pre-release software in use.

The latest Windows 11 Insider release underscores Microsoft’s commitment to refining both routine and advanced functions as part of its Insider Program strategy. As rollout continues, Canary Channel users should expect variations in feature availability, alongside the opportunity to relay feedback that shapes upcoming Windows 11 updates.
