Mortal Shell 2 is a single-player action RPG for PC from Cold Symmetry, available on Steam.
You play the Harbinger, a hollow figure who cannot fight well alone but can climb inside the bodies of dead warriors and borrow what they knew. Each body, called a Shell, comes with its own moves and history.
There is no stamina bar, and that changes everything. You can sprint, roll and swing as much as you want, so fights come down to timing instead of a meter running out. The skill you need is the parry, which means blocking at the exact moment a hit lands.
Steam styles the title as Mortal Shell II, and it launched on August 20, 2026 alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S versions. It runs on Windows 10 and 11, needs an SSD, and has full controller support including the DualSense.

- Step 1. Open the Mortal Shell 2 Steam page.
- Step 2. Pick the standard edition unless you want the skins.
- Step 3. Sign in to your Steam account, or make a free one.
- Step 4. Pay, then open your library and click Install.
- Step 5. Choose an SSD as the install drive and clear 70 GB on it.
- Step 6. Let Steam finish any update before you launch.
- Step 7. Plug in a controller if you have one. The game supports DualSense and Xbox pads in full.
- Step 8. Turn your brightness up in the display settings before the first area.

Mortal Shell 2 is on Boosteroid, which runs the game on its own hardware and sends you the picture, so your machine only has to play a video. The game is marked as license required, meaning you buy it on Steam once and then launch it through the service. Use a wired connection if you can, because delay costs you blocks you would otherwise land.
What Is Mortal Shell 2?
Mortal Shell 2 is a third-person action RPG set in a ruined fantasy world ruled by gods who should not be in charge. You are the Harbinger, and your own body is close to useless, so you survive by possessing the corpses of eight lost warriors and using their skills as your own. Finding a Shell is the real progress here, not a level number.
The world is one connected map rather than a set of separate levels, and Cold Symmetry kept it small on purpose. Large dungeons hold the major bosses. Smaller crypts and side rooms sit off the main path and hold weapons, upgrades and the occasional new Shell.
Combat is what sets it apart. You get light and heavy attacks, a roll, a parry, and Harden, the series trick that turns you to stone in the middle of a swing so a hit bounces off you. Keep landing blows and an enemy loses its balance, which opens it up for one big hit. Nothing you do drains a meter, so the pressure comes from reading the enemy rather than from managing your energy.

Key Features
Eight Shells to Wear
Every dead warrior you take over gives you a different body, a different special move and a different story. It is closer to changing character than to changing armor.
No Stamina Bar
Sprint, roll and attack as much as you like. Nothing runs out and nothing needs to refill before you can move again.
Harden Returns
Turn to stone in the middle of your own swing and the hit bounces off you. It is the move the series is known for, and it saves you constantly.
Weapons You Actually Build
Every weapon can be upgraded, and they swing differently enough that the choice matters. One of them is a lute that makes enemies turn on each other.
Tarstone Loadouts
Tarstones are stones you slot in to boost what you are good at. There are four groups, and picking one direction beats spreading them thin.

One connected map, kept small on purpose, with big dungeons for the bosses and small crypts hiding upgrades for anyone who wanders.
How Combat Works Without a Stamina Bar
In most games like this, every swing and every roll drains a bar, and you wait for it to fill back up. Cold Symmetry took that bar out. It sounds like a small change. It moves where the difficulty sits.

Dodging Is Free
Roll as often as you want. Nothing stops you, so the only cost is the split second you spend getting back on your feet.
DEFENSE
Blocking at the Right Moment
A parry is a block timed to the exact moment a hit lands. It is how you shut an attack down, and some enemies swing three or four times in a row, so you have to catch each one.
OFFENSE
Balance Beats Health
Enemies have a balance meter as well as a health bar. Keep landing hits and their balance breaks, which opens them up for one big strike. On bosses that is much faster than chipping away at health.
SURVIVAL
Harden Is Your Escape
Because nothing holds you back, you will swing too early. Harden turns you to stone mid-swing so the hit you earned bounces off instead.
Shells: The Bodies You Take Over
A Shell is the corpse of a warrior you climb into and fight as. The first game gave you five. This one has eight, and you have to go and find every one of them. Most players finish having barely touched half, which is the reason to play it twice. Pick a name to see what it does and where it is.

What it does. Tiel turns invisible. A room that kills you head on becomes a room you take apart from behind, one enemy at a time.
Where to find it. Southeast of the Widow’s Overlook beacon. Look for the grave in the search area and interact with the body.

Proxima, the Broodseeker
What it does. Her Biosampler fires a hook from her arm that drags an enemy into range, then follows with a strike that inflicts lightning. Her Grafted Armor also gives her a chance to shrug off part of any hit.
Where to find it. Northeast of the Blackridge Pass beacon, inside the Shattered Beacon dungeon.

Smert, the Apostate
What it does. Smert freezes time and throws a flurry of punches, and the effects they leave behind change from one use to the next.
Where to find it. Southwest of the Outskirts of Nochte beacon. Make blood offerings at the stone circles, then interact with the body near the statue.

Eredrim, the Venerable
Where to find it. In the Citadel of Penance. Beat the miniboss called The Warden on the elevator platform and the Shell is yours.
His armor design is the one people keep posting screenshots of, so you will know him when you see him.

Lazlo, the Justiciar
Where to find it. Underground, through the High Lords Courtyard beacon. Beat Vellen, High Lord of Mammon, to claim it.
The southern half of Mammon is a real step up in difficulty, so come with a build you trust.

Genessa, the Wayward
Where to find it. Beat Sester Secundus in the Revenant Graves dungeon to get the Sester’s Censer, then trade it to Genessa at Marrow Keep.
This is the one Shell you have to hand something over for rather than simply take.

Where to find it. Take the Heart of Vatra from the Temple of Vatra and bring it to Gragu at the One Legged Wolf Tavern.
Do the temple first. There is no way to shortcut the trade.

Where to find it. You fight Sariel once on a stone platform, then again inside the Chamber of Becoming. The second win hands you the Shell.

Beat him twice
Every Shell gets stronger the more you use it and the more you learn about who it was. Sticking with one is a real plan. So is carrying a second for the fights the first cannot handle.
Is This Game for You?
You Will Love It If:

🎮 Our Take
The first Mortal Shell was a good idea on a small budget, and you could feel both halves of that. This is the version that works, and dropping the stamina bar is the decision doing most of the lifting. Without a meter to hide behind, the bosses have to be interesting to fight rather than expensive to fight, and they mostly are. Taking over a dead warrior to borrow their skills is also a better idea than picking a class off a menu, and eight of them gives it room the first game never had.
The honest catch is the small dungeons. The big ones are strong, but the little crypts between them repeat themselves, and by the second half you will walk past a few. If you want a hard game you can actually finish, buy it. If you want something the size of Elden Ring, this is not trying to be that, and you will feel short-changed for the wrong reason.
Why Play on PC?
- Higher framerates. The timing windows here are short, and a smoother picture gives you more of a moment to react. Consoles run at whatever the hardware allows.
- Graphics control. You can turn effects down to see more clearly in dark rooms, which helps in a game this gloomy.
- Faster loading. Steam requires an SSD, and a good one shortens the walk back after a death you did not enjoy.
- Display options. Resolution, frame cap and camera width are yours to set instead of picked for you.

Tips for Beginners
Learn to block on time before anything else
Rolling costs you nothing, so it feels like the answer to everything. It is not. Blocking at the right moment is what knocks an enemy off balance, and the bosses are built assuming you will.
Use Harden to cancel a bad swing
Its real value is stopping your own attack when you started it too early. Standing still and turning to stone on purpose wastes it.
Leave the main path early and often
New Shells, weapons and upgrades sit off to the side. The world is small enough that a detour costs you minutes, not an evening.
Stay in one Shell long enough to feel it
Shells get stronger the more you use them. Switching every fight keeps all eight weak, and one you have leaned on for hours beats a fresh one that looks interesting.
Pick one direction for your Tarstones
The four groups pull different ways. Find the thing you already do well and stack it, instead of putting one stone in each group.
