ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors is a free office suite for Windows, available on the official website and the Microsoft Store. It opens Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and PDFs in one app, with each file in its own tab.
The newest release, version 10.0, is built around AI. You can now connect the AI provider you already use, or a model running on your own PC, and use it inside every editor. The AI part is optional and stays off until you install it.
ONLYOFFICE comes from Ascensio System SIA. It is open source under the AGPL v3 license and runs on Windows 7 through Windows 11.

What Is ONLYOFFICE?
ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors puts four editors in one app: documents, spreadsheets, presentations and PDFs. It saves in Microsoft’s own formats (DOCX, XLSX and PPTX) by default, so a file you send to someone using Microsoft Office keeps its layout, fonts and charts.
It also opens OpenDocument files from LibreOffice (ODT, ODS, ODP), CSV and plain text. The interface uses tabs across the top, much like Microsoft Office, so most people find their way around in minutes.
You can work fully offline. Connect a cloud such as Nextcloud, Dropbox or Box, and you can edit the same file with other people in real time.
What Is New in ONLYOFFICE 10.0

A cleaner home screen
The start window was redesigned. The buttons moved to a sidebar on the left, with AI Chat, Templates, Clouds and AI Tools one click away.
Create a new document, spreadsheet, presentation or PDF from the top of the screen, or drag a file in to open it.
Ready-made AI actions for every file type
AI Tools is a list of one-click jobs. Merge or redact a PDF, compare two documents, clean messy spreadsheet data, or turn a document into slides, and AI Chat does the work.
In 10.0 the old AI agent and AI plugin are joined into one module, so everything AI lives in one place. ONLYOFFICE labels it a beta in 10.0.
Pick your own AI provider
AI Chat does not come with its own model. You connect ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Mistral, Groq, xAI or DeepSeek, or run a local model on your PC through Ollama, LM Studio or GPT4All.
Attach a document, spreadsheet, presentation or PDF and ask it to summarize, proofread, translate or analyze the data.
AI inside the PDF editor
Open a PDF and AI Chat sits in a panel beside it. It can answer questions about the PDF, summarize it, or redact private details.
The Redact tool can now also strip a PDF’s hidden metadata, and signatures you add to forms are saved for next time.
Presentations
New Outline, Notes and Reading View modes, printing of notes and handouts, and export of slides as an animated GIF or a video.
Spreadsheets
Save to the old XLS format, build charts from cells that are not next to each other, and switch AutoComplete off. Large formulas run faster.
Documents
Follow another person’s cursor while you co-edit, keep a table row from splitting across pages, and set up horizontal lines in their own window.
Odoo and OFD
Odoo joins the cloud list, so you can edit Odoo files on your desktop. ONLYOFFICE can also open and convert OFD files, a Chinese document format.
Two things went away in 10.0. Local templates were removed, so templates now load from the internet. The AI plugin is no longer in the default install; you add AI Tools when you want them. Full details are in the official changelog.

Office files that keep their layout
DOCX, XLSX and PPTX are ONLYOFFICE’s own formats, not a translation. Tables, charts and page breaks usually land where Microsoft Office put them.
A real PDF editor
Edit PDF text and images, add comments and highlights, fill in or build forms, and sign them. Most free suites only view PDFs or convert them first.
Tabs for every open file
A spreadsheet, a report and a slide deck sit side by side in one window, like browser tabs. No hunting through the taskbar.
Real-time co-editing
Connect ONLYOFFICE, Nextcloud, ownCloud, Seafile, Box, Dropbox, Moodle, Odoo or another listed cloud to edit with other people and leave comments.
Plugins
Add extras such as translation, code highlighting or YouTube embeds from the built-in plugin manager.
Protection
Password-protect files, add watermarks and sign documents digitally.
How to Install ONLYOFFICE on Windows
From the official website
1 Open the ONLYOFFICE Desktop page at onlyoffice.com and click Download.
2 Pick your installer. Most people want the small online installer. Full installers exist for 64-bit, 32-bit and Arm64 Windows, as EXE or MSI.
3 Run the installer and follow the setup steps. You need administrator rights on the PC.
4 Open ONLYOFFICE from the Start menu and create a new document, spreadsheet, presentation or PDF.
From the Microsoft Store
1 Open the ONLYOFFICE listing on the Microsoft Store.
2 Click Get or Install, then open it from the Start menu. The Store keeps it updated for you.
Updating from version 9 or older? ONLYOFFICE rebuilt the app for 10.0, so some settings do not carry over. After the update, sign in to your clouds again in the Clouds section. If you used a custom user name, type it again in Settings.

Is ONLYOFFICE Free?
Yes. ONLYOFFICE says the desktop app is free for personal and professional use, Every editor is included in the free download.
Desktop Editors
Free on Windows, Mac and Linux, with free mobile apps for Android and iPhone. Open source under the AGPL v3 license.
AI Tools
The add-on is free, but the AI provider you connect may charge for use. A local model through Ollama, LM Studio or GPT4All costs nothing beyond your own hardware.
ONLYOFFICE Enterprise
The paid tier is for companies that want support contracts, training and help moving their files over. Home users do not need it.
ONLYOFFICE vs LibreOffice vs Microsoft Office
All three open Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. The difference is which format each one treats as home, and that decides how well a shared file keeps its layout.

Templates and Cloud Connections
Both sections were redesigned in 10.0. Templates now load from ONLYOFFICE’s online library, and every cloud has its own Connect button.
Search a template instead of starting blank
Search by name or filter by category, purpose and language. Resumes, invoices, contracts, business plans and PDF forms are all in the library.
Connect a cloud to work as a team
Click Connect next to a provider and sign in. Files from that cloud open in the desktop app with your local fonts and printer, and other people can edit them at the same time.
System Requirements
ONLYOFFICE supports Windows 7, which most office apps dropped long ago. Heavy files with lots of images or formulas need more than the minimum, so treat these as a floor.
Tips for Getting Started
1 Make it your default for Office files. Right-click a DOCX file, choose Open with, then Choose another app, pick ONLYOFFICE and tick Always.
2 Try a local AI model first. Ollama or LM Studio keeps your documents on your PC and costs nothing per question.
3 Use Redact before you share a PDF. It removes names, numbers and now the file’s hidden metadata, not just what you can see on the page.
4 Switch to the dark theme. Open Settings and pick a dark interface theme. Since 9.4 the spreadsheet grid goes dark too.
5 Keep a backup of important files before co-editing. Real-time editing writes changes as people type, so save a copy first if the file matters.
