Riverbed leverages AI for smarter network visibility

Key points:

  • Riverbed has shifted from being a WAN optimization company to an AI-powered network observability platform, using its own data store for better performance.
  • The new Network Observability Essentials bundle includes AI tools, real-time monitoring, and flexible software options that work with Microsoft Windows, cloud, and virtual systems.
  • Riverbed’s xx90 hardware appliances offer faster data processing, and the subscription licensing model helps customers run software anywhere—on-premises, in virtual machines, or in cloud platforms like Azure.

Riverbed, long known for improving network speed with products like Steelhead, is now focusing on AI-driven network monitoring and automation. The company just announced a big step forward in helping businesses keep their networks running smoothly using smart tools powered by artificial intelligence.

CEO Dave Donatelli said that over the past two years, Riverbed has changed quickly. It’s gone from selling basic tools for speeding up networks to offering full platforms for watching and managing complex systems using AI.

At the center of these changes is something called the Riverbed Data Store—a special system that stores and organizes huge amounts of data without slowing things down. This tech lets Riverbed bring AI directly to where the data lives instead of moving large files around, which makes everything faster and safer.

One major part of this update is the new Network Observability Essentials package. It includes tools that help IT teams find and fix problems before users even notice them. These tools support role-based views, integrate with popular dashboards like Grafana, and show how apps are performing across networks.

Another important change is the release of new xx90 hardware devices that support high-speed packet capture and real-time analysis. They can handle massive storage needs and work with Riverbed’s updated software like AppResponse 11.21, which can now monitor encrypted traffic more effectively.

Riverbed also unveiled four types of AI technologies under its Riverbed IQ platform:

  • Predictive AI watches for issues that might happen soon
  • Causal AI finds out why problems happen
  • Generative AI writes fixes and answers automatically
  • Agentic AI acts like a set of skills that other tools can use

These AI tools are already helping customers reduce support calls and solve issues quickly—like one business that fixed many Windows upgrade errors with just one click.

Finally, Riverbed is making it easier for organizations to buy and use its software through a new flexible subscription model. This means users can run Riverbed tools on dedicated hardware, inside virtual machines, or even in public clouds like Microsoft Azure, giving businesses more control over how they manage IT operations.
