Microsoft Unveils Surface Copilot+ PCs Designed for AI-Driven Education

Microsoft has launched the Surface Copilot+ PC portfolio, a new line of devices tailored for K-12 and higher education institutions. The release, announced ahead of the ISTELive 25 conference in San Antonio, aims to address evolving classroom demands, including the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), security, and accessibility. The lineup includes the 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop, both optimized for educational use and scheduled for availability in schools starting July 22.

Developed in response to feedback from educators, the Copilot+ PCs emphasize ease of use, reliability, and seamless AI integration. The devices use Microsoft’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU), a dedicated chip for on-device AI tasks, enabling faster performance while safeguarding privacy. Features like Microsoft Copilot help personalize learning through role-playing lessons and interactive content, while built-in tools such as Click to Do, Voice Access, and Live Captions support student comprehension and accessibility. These AI functions run locally, reducing reliance on internet connectivity and enhancing security.

Schools are prioritizing device security and management in the era of remote learning and hybrid classrooms. The Copilot+ PCs include enterprise-grade security designed by Microsoft, such as the Pluton chip for protecting sensitive data and Windows 11 Pro’s default security protocols. Integration with Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Entra, and Microsoft Purview allows IT teams to control access, monitor activity, and deploy software updates efficiently. QR codes on devices streamline inventory and repairs, offering institutions a scalable solution for maintaining device fleets.

Examples of adoption highlight the devices’ potential. In the UK, Royal Grammar School Newcastle has incorporated Surface Pro models to facilitate collaborative learning with AI. Sue Buist, the school’s director of Digital Strategy, noted that AI-powered tools have transformed classroom dynamics, enabling personalized instruction and reducing administrative workloads. Meanwhile, in Japan, the Aichi Prefectural Board of Education has distributed over 200 Surface Pro units to high schools, emphasizing their speed and user-friendly interfaces. Haruhiko Goto, a coordinator for a science-focused high school, reported that digital grading tasks, once taking an hour manually, now require only 40 minutes with the new devices.

The Copilot+ PCs also align with Microsoft’s broader Windows 11 strategy, offering schools a timely upgrade as Windows 10 support concludes in October 2025. Equipped with Snapdragon X Series or Intel Core Ultra (Series 2) processors, these devices support widely used educational apps such as Google Classroom, Minecraft Education, and Adobe Express, ensuring compatibility with existing curricula.

Microsoft is promoting the devices as part of its Microsoft Learning Zone, a free app integrating AI for educators to generate lessons, assess student progress, and create interactive content. Other innovations, like Click to Do (preview) and multilingual Live Captions, underscore the company’s focus on inclusivity and reducing learning barriers.

For individual users, the new models are available at Microsoft Stores, where K-12 or university students, educators, and families can claim a 10% discount on select devices.
