Microsoft announced the release of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27924 to the Canary Channel. This build includes several new features, including Copilot+ PC experiences, which are being enabled for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel. The Copilot+ PC experiences include features such as improved Windows Search and agent in Settings, although some features are still being rolled out and may not be available to all users immediately.
The build also introduces Advanced Settings, which can be found in Settings > System > Advanced. This page has been redesigned to make it easier for users to find settings, and includes new features such as Enable long paths, Virtual workspaces, and File Explorer + version control. Enable long paths allows users to remove MAX_PATH limitations from common Win32 file and directory functions, while Virtual workspaces enable users to enable or disable virtual environments such as Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox. File Explorer + version control provides the ability to display Git information directly inside File Explorer.
In addition to these new features, the build also includes several changes and improvements, such as an updated pointer indicator and changes to the keyboard shortcut for the new pointer indicator. Windows MIDI Services have also been updated, with a feedback-driven breaking change to optionally allow for waiting for messages to be completely sent before returning from function calls.
The build also includes several fixes, including a fix for an issue where the progress wheel might show as a rectangle glyph instead of rendering correctly, and a fix for an issue causing widgets to disappear or not work for some Insiders. Remote desktop issues have also been fixed, including an issue where remote desktop only used the primary monitor even if it was configured to use multiple monitors.
However, the build also includes several known issues, including an issue where joining the Canary Channel on a new Copilot+ PC may result in the loss of Windows Hello pin and biometrics, and an issue where the Click to Do feature may not work and may crash. Microsoft is working to fix these issues in future updates.
The Snipping Tool has also been updated with a new window mode screen recording feature, which allows users to capture activity within a specific app window. This feature can be accessed by toggling to the Record option in the capture toolbar and selecting the window mode option. Microsoft is asking for feedback on this feature through the Feedback Hub.
As with all builds in the Canary Channel, these builds represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced, and may never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Microsoft is using Control Feature Rollout technology to roll out features, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as feedback is monitored. Some features may show up in the Dev and Beta Channels first before showing up in the Canary Channel. Users who want to get off the Canary Channel will need to perform a clean install of Windows 11. The desktop watermark shown at the lower right corner of the desktop is normal for these pre-release builds.
