Over the Hill is an off-road driving and exploration game for PC from Funselektor, available on Steam. You drive classic 4x4s from the 1960s to the 1980s across forests, lakes, mountains and desert canyons. You pick your own route, get stuck, and work out how to get unstuck.

Teamwork is what sets it apart from art of rally, the studio’s last game. Up to four friends can drive the same trails online, pulling each other out with winches and laying planks over gaps. There is no timer and no race to win.

It came out on October 14, 2026, for Windows 10 and 11, and it also runs on Steam Deck. It has full controller support, and Funselektor made it with Strelka Games.

What Is Over the Hill?

Over the Hill is the third game from Funselektor, the Canadian studio behind Absolute Drift and art of rally. The official name is written all in lowercase, “over the hill”, in the same style as art of rally. It is a driving game, not a racing game. Nobody is timing you.

A green 4x4 with a canoe on the roof leads a convoy with headlights on along a rocky trail in the rain at night

Weather and night change how a trail drives.

You explore areas inside larger regions inspired by real places. The first two are Canada, with forests, lakes and snowy peaks, and Algeria, with desert canyons and palm-lined rivers. Along the way you find cabins, viewpoints, fallen meteorites, wildlife and portals that take you to new areas.

Planks get you across gaps the trail cannot.

The challenge is the ground itself. Steep rocks, deep water, mud and gaps stop you, and you get past them with tools: planks to bridge gaps, a winch (a cable on a motor that pulls the truck) to drag yourself or a friend free, and equipment you pick up as you go. Dynamic weather and a day and night cycle change how slippery and dark a trail gets.

Our Take

🎮 Our Take

Over the Hill takes the best part of art of rally, the quiet drives between stages, and builds a whole game around it. The co-op is the real hook: a stuck truck is a chore alone and a funny story with three friends and a winch. At $24.99 for a 4 GB game, it is an easy one to try. Two things to know first. It is slow on purpose, so anyone hoping for a rally sequel will be bored. And the minimum graphics card, a GTX 1070, is higher than the simple art style suggests, so older laptops may struggle.

If you have a group that wants something relaxed to play together, buy it now. If you play alone and want the deepest off-road physics, SnowRunner goes further into mud and truck handling. The base game is all you need; get the Supporter Edition only if you want to back the studio.

System Requirements

Funselektor lists one spec on Steam, a minimum tested at 1080p. There is no separate recommended tier, so treat this as the floor for smooth play at Full HD.

Tips for Beginners

1

Use low gear on steep climbs

Every 4×4 has a low and a high gear. Low gives you slow, strong pulling power for rocks and steep slopes.

2

Watch the ground, not just the trail

Grip changes with the surface, the weather and how worn your tires are. Wet rock and mud need a gentle throttle.

3

Save your repair kits

Damage slows your truck down, and repair kits are limited. You can also use one on a friend’s truck.

4

Winch early, not late

If a slope looks too steep, anchor the winch before you slide back. It is easier than climbing out of a ditch.

5

Keep your camera handy

Photograph every new animal you see. Each one fills a page of your wildlife compendium.

Best Over the Hill Mods to Start With

Over the Hill has no Steam Workshop. Mods come from Nexus Mods, and most of them need MelonLoader (a free tool that loads mods into the game). These five add new cameras, controls and ways to explore.

These are fan-made and install into the game folder by hand. Turn them off before you join someone else’s co-op session, because a mod one player has and the others do not can cause problems online. A game update can also break a mod until its author fixes it.

Over the Hill FAQ

Is Over the Hill open world?
Not as one giant map. The world is split into hand-made areas inside larger regions, starting with Canada and Algeria. You can drive from one area into the next without going back to the main menu.
Does progress carry over between solo and co-op?
Yes. Funselektor says progress and finished objectives carry over between single-player and multiplayer. Each player keeps their own progress, so everyone has to reach a checkpoint themselves to count it.
Does Over the Hill have split-screen?
No. Co-op is online only, for up to four players. Funselektor has said split-screen and local co-op are not possible for now.
Can I play Over the Hill on Steam Deck?
Yes. Funselektor lists Steam Deck support alongside Windows. There is no native Linux or Mac version, so the Deck runs the Windows version through Proton (Valve’s compatibility layer).
Is Over the Hill coming to Xbox, PS5 or Switch 2?
Yes. Funselektor has announced versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, planned for 2027. On PC it is sold on Steam.
What are the Over the Hill system requirements?
The minimum is 64-bit Windows 10, an Intel Core i5-7400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, 8 GB of RAM, an Nvidia GTX 1070 or AMD Radeon RX 5600, DirectX 11 and 4 GB of storage. Funselektor tested that spec at 1080p and has not published a recommended tier.
