Immediate Changes for Insiders

Microsoft will begin testing several user-requested changes with its Windows Insider program in April. The most visible update will let users reposition the taskbar to the top, left, or right side of the screen, not just the bottom. This addresses a long-standing customization ask.

The approach to Copilot AI integration will become more selective. Microsoft stated it will reduce entry points in specific apps, starting with the Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets, and Notepad, aiming to deploy AI where it is genuinely useful. Other initial changes include giving users more control over Windows Update, such as the ability to skip updates during setup, pause them for longer periods, and restart without installing them. The Feedback Hub app is also receiving a major redesign starting immediately, intended to make submitting and tracking feedback easier.

Pavan Davuluri, Executive Vice President of Windows and Devices, communicated these plans in a letter to Insiders. He noted that months of community feedback highlighted a desire for a better, more dependable Windows. The changes are the first step in a broader yearly plan to improve Windows 11 quality.

Yearlong Plan Focuses on Performance, Reliability, Craft

Microsoft outlined a detailed strategy for the rest of the year centered on three pillars: performance, reliability, and craft.

Under performance, the goal is a smoother, faster experience. Improvements will target system responsiveness, memory use, and the speed of core elements like File Explorer and the Start menu. A key technical shift involves moving more interface elements to the WinUI 3 framework to reduce lag. The Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) will also see performance boosts for file operations and networking.

The reliability pillar focuses on trust and stability. This includes making the Windows Insider Program clearer, with better definitions for its channels and higher-quality test builds. System-wide efforts aim to reduce crashes, improve driver stability, and strengthen connections for Bluetooth devices, printers, cameras, and audio peripherals. Windows Update will become less disruptive, moving toward a single monthly reboot by default while still allowing faster feature adoption for those who want it. Windows Hello biometric login will be made more consistent for facial and fingerprint recognition.

The craft pillar emphasizes thoughtful design and reducing distraction. Users will get more personalization for the Start menu and taskbar, including a smaller taskbar option. The "Recommended" section in Start will become more relevant with clearer controls. The overall experience will be "quieter," with streamlined device setup, less intrusive Widgets, and fewer notifications. Search results will be faster and more clearly separated into device-based and web-based findings.

Microsoft said these improvements are part of a behind-the-scenes shift toward deeper testing and more intentional feature rollouts. All work aligns with the company’s broader Secure Future Initiative to harden security by default. Davuluri stated that Insiders should expect to see and feel tangible progress in monthly builds. The company also plans to hold more in-person community events globally following a recent meetup in Seattle. The stated aim is to build Windows 11 with greater confidence, ensuring new features are stable and valuable before reaching a wider audience.
