Key Points

  • Microsoft releases Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27863 to the Canary Channel, introducing post-quantum cryptography support.
  • The update fixes several issues, including Windows Sandbox functionality and app crashes with Hebrew or Arabic languages.
  • Known issues remain, such as problems with Windows Hello PIN setup on Copilot+ PCs and non-responsive pen input.

Microsoft announced the release of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27863 to the Canary Channel, marking a significant update for Windows Insiders. This release does not include SDKs for the 27xxx series builds for the time being. The Canary Channel is known for early platform changes, and these builds may not align with specific Windows releases, as features are subject to change or removal based on feedback.

Post-Quantum Cryptography Support
A major highlight of this build is the integration of post-quantum signature algorithm ML-DSA into NCrypt, BCrypt cryptography API surfaces, and Crypt32 certificate APIs. This addition, announced at the Build conference, supports three variants: ML-DSA 44, 65, and 87. Insiders are encouraged to test and validate ML-DSA certificates on Build 27858 and higher.

Fixes and Improvements
The update addresses several key issues:

  • Windows Sandbox now functions correctly, resolving the error 0xc0370106 that occurred on launch in the previous flight.
  • Core Windows surfaces (File Explorer, Start menu, etc.) now load properly in safe mode.
  • A fix for msftedit.dll prevents crashes in apps like Sticky Notes and Dxdiag for users with Hebrew or Arabic display languages.

Known Issues and Workarounds
Despite the improvements, several known issues persist:

  • Copilot+ PC users joining the Canary Channel from other channels may encounter errors with Windows Hello PIN and biometrics. Re-creating the PIN is recommended.
  • An Administrative Templates error in Group Policy Editor is partially resolved, with a complete fix expected in a future update.
  • The taskbar may not display acrylic material after upgrading.
  • High-sampling audio devices (e.g., 192Hz) with multiple channels may not produce sound.
  • Pen input may be unresponsive on certain PCs.
  • Task Manager experiences issues with search and filtering options.

Reminders for Canary Channel Insiders
Microsoft reiterated that Canary Channel builds are early development snapshots and may not reflect final releases. Features can change, be removed, or be replaced based on feedback. Control Feature Rollout technology means some features are initially available to a subset of Insiders. Localization of features is an ongoing process, and feedback is crucial for refinement. Insiders cannot switch to lower build number channels without a clean installation of Windows 11. The desktop watermark on pre-release builds is normal.

As Microsoft continues to refine Windows 11 through the Canary Channel, Insiders play a vital role in shaping the operating system’s future. The company monitors feedback closely, working to address known issues and introduce new concepts. For a comprehensive overview of Insider channels and builds, users can refer to Flight Hub. With ongoing testing and community input, Microsoft aims to deliver a robust and secure Windows experience, incorporating advancements like post-quantum cryptography and enhancing existing features such as Windows Sandbox and Azure-related services.
