Microsoft has announced the release of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27954 to the Canary Channel. This update includes a small set of general improvements and fixes aimed at enhancing the overall experience for Insiders running this build on their PCs. Specifically, the update addresses an issue where users might not be able to connect to shared files and folders if they were using the Server Message Block (SMB) v1 protocol on NetBIOS over TCP/IP NetBIOS (NetBT) after the latest updates.
In terms of known issues, Microsoft is working on a fix for a problem causing some Insiders with Arm64 PCs to experience an increase in bugchecks (green screens) with error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL in the latest Canary builds. Additionally, PIX on Windows is currently unable to play back GPU captures on this OS version, although a new PIX release is estimated to arrive by the end of September to address this issue.
For Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel, it is essential to note that the builds released to this channel represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be seen as matched to any specific release of Windows. Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as Microsoft tries out different concepts and gathers feedback. Some features may change over time, be removed, or replaced, and never get released beyond Windows Insiders.
Microsoft uses Control Feature Rollout technology to roll out many features in the Canary Channel, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as they monitor feedback. Some features may show up in the Dev and Beta Channels first before appearing in the Canary Channel. Furthermore, some features in active development may not be fully localized, and localization will occur over time as features are finalized. Insiders are encouraged to report any issues with localization to Microsoft via Feedback Hub.
To switch out of the Canary Channel, a clean install of Windows 11 will be required. As a reminder, Insiders cannot switch to a channel that is receiving builds with lower build numbers without doing a clean installation of Windows 11 due to technical setup requirements. The desktop watermark shown at the lower right corner of the desktop is normal for these pre-release builds. Microsoft encourages Insiders to check out Flight Hub for a complete look at what build is in which Insider channel.
The release of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27954 to the Canary Channel marks another step in Microsoft’s ongoing development and testing of Windows 11. As the company continues to refine and improve the operating system, Insiders can expect to see further updates and fixes in the coming weeks and months. With its commitment to transparency and community involvement, Microsoft is working to ensure that Windows 11 meets the needs and expectations of its users.
