Windows Search is now faster and more streamlined: updates improve speed and usability

Share

Microsoft is overhauling Windows Search to move users faster from finding things to doing tasks. As reported on the Windows Insider blog, the engine is being rebuilt to run more efficiently. The main change is a rebuild on a newer software foundation. This update arrives first for people testing the latest Insider software. Microsoft wants your feedback to shape the final design.

Key Points

  • Built on WinUI 3 improves speed and memory usage.
  • Inline actions handle settings changes without new apps.
  • Build 26340.9616 is needed to unlock the feature flag.

What is changing

The core application uses a newer software library called WinUI 3. This rewrite lets the search box load faster and use less system memory. The interface also dropped the wide preview area to create a single list for results. This matches how most people actually click through items today. Data shows nearly all clicks come from the results list.

Microsoft added smarter matching for typos and synonyms. Search results now include inline previews for files and web answers. You can issue commands such as turn on Bluetooth to control your PC directly from the box.

Why it matters

This update matters most to Insiders who test new features before everyone else. Casual owners of stable Windows 11 likely will not see changes immediately. Microsoft plans to bring the new design to the Start menu next year.

There is a catch for early adopters. The initial release supports English only and requires enabling a specific flag in settings. You can enable it under Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Feature flags. Please submit reports to Feedback Hub under Desktop Environment > Search.

If you have tested this version, share what works best in the comments.
