Fortnite is a free battle royale game for PC from Epic Games, available on the Epic Games Store. Up to 100 players jump from a flying bus onto an island, grab weapons and fight while a storm shrinks the map. The last player or team standing wins.
Building is what made it famous. You can put up walls, ramps and floors in a second, and a good builder can turn a losing fight around. If that sounds like too much, Zero Build mode takes building out completely.
It runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11 and works with mouse and keyboard or a controller. One download also gets you Reload, Fortnite OG, LEGO Fortnite, Fortnite Festival, Save the World and thousands of player-made islands.

What You Need to Know
- Fortnite is free. On PC it only comes from the Epic Games Store, not Steam.
- Every mode, including Save the World, is free to play. Money only buys cosmetics, passes and V-Bucks.
- Cross-play is on, so you can squad up with friends on console and mobile.
- Player-made islands are the Fortnite version of mods, and you play them with a map code.
- It does not run on Linux or the Steam Deck. Cloud gaming is the workaround.
Quick Facts
How to Download Fortnite on Windows
You need the free Epic Games Launcher and an Epic Games account. The whole thing takes a few minutes plus the download.
- Step 1. Install the Epic Games Launcher. Download it from the Epic Games Store.
- Step 2. Sign in or create an account. It is free.
- Step 3. Open the Fortnite page. Search for Fortnite in the launcher or go to Fortnite on the Epic Games Store.
- Step 4. Click Get, then Install. Pick a drive with plenty of free space, ideally an SSD.
- Step 5. Launch it and pick a mode. The first start installs extra files, so give it a minute.
Turn on two-factor sign-in. Epic asks for it before you can play competitive events or send gifts, and it protects the skins on your account. Set it up in your Epic account settings under Password and Security.
Is Fortnite Free? What Costs Money
Everything you can play in Fortnite is free. Money only buys looks, never power, so a player who never spends a cent has the same guns and the same chances as one who spends a lot.
V-Bucks are the in-game currency, sold in packs on the Epic Games Store and in the game. Some Battle Passes pay back part of their cost in V-Bucks as you level up. If you have kids on the account, Epic’s parental controls can cap or block spending.
💡 Your PC is too weak? Cloud gaming is an option. Try Boosteroid. Fortnite also runs on GeForce NOW.
What Is Fortnite?
Every Battle Royale match starts on the Battle Bus. You jump, glide down and land with only a pickaxe. Then you have a few minutes to find weapons, healing and shields before the storm starts closing in. Busy towns have better loot and more fights; quiet corners are safer but slower.
Fights are fast and loud. You can build cover in a second, then edit a window or door into it to shoot through. The island changes every season, with new places, weapons and items, while a few favorite weapons always come back.
Fortnite is also a menu of separate games that share one download, one account and one locker of skins. These are the modes Epic runs itself:
Save the World, the original co-op mode where you build forts and fight off monster waves with friends, also lives in the Play menu. It became free for everyone on April 16, 2026. Epic retired Rocket Racing and Ballistic in 2026, so older guides that list them are out of date.

Is This Game for You?
Our Take
🎮 Our Take
Fortnite is less one game than a free platform of them, and that is its biggest strength. The battle royale feels sharp, Zero Build made it friendly to people who never learned to build, and having Reload, OG, LEGO and thousands of player islands one menu away means there is always something new to try with friends. The downsides are just as clear: the Item Shop and crossover skins are everywhere, seasons change things fast enough that a returning player can feel lost, and building fights against long-time players can be brutal at first.
If you want a free game to play with friends on any device, download it tonight and start in Zero Build or Reload. If you prefer slower, tactical shooters, or the cartoon look and nonstop crossovers put you off, try a few rounds before you spend anything, and do not feel bad moving on.
System Requirements
These are the specs Epic publishes on its support site. Fortnite runs on modest laptops, but 16 GB of RAM and an SSD make a big difference. The third column is what Epic suggests for its highest quality settings.
On an older PC, set the Rendering Mode in the video settings to Performance. It drops a lot of visual detail but can raise your frame rate a lot. If you are shopping for a new machine, our Best Gaming Desktops guide is a good place to start.
Tips for Beginners
Start in Zero Build
Learn the guns, the map and the storm first. Building can come later, once fights stop feeling rushed.
Practice on a creative island
Free practice islands let you train aim and building with no waiting. Ten minutes before a match helps a lot.
Land away from the bus path
Spots right under the bus fill up fast. Landing a little further out gives you time to find a gun first.
Turn on Visualize Sound Effects
This setting shows footsteps, chests and gunfire on screen. It helps a lot, with or without headphones.
Heal and shield before you push
Most early losses come from taking a fight at half health. Patch up behind cover, then move.
Best Fortnite Creative Islands to Start With
Fortnite does not use mods in the usual sense. Instead, players build their own games inside Fortnite as islands, and you can play any of them free with a 12-digit map code. Epic reviews islands before they go live, and creators earn a share of Fortnite’s income when people play them.
There are thousands, from build practice to horror, racing and roleplay. These four are long-running favorites and a good place to start.
How to play an island with a map code
- Step 1. Open Fortnite and go to the Play screen.
- Step 2. Click the search box at the top of the island list.
- Step 3. Type the map code, such as 3729-0643-9775, and pick the island.
- Step 4. Click Play. Your party joins with you.
Want to make your own island?
There are two free ways. Creative is built into Fortnite: pick the Creative tile in the Play menu and build on your own island with a controller or mouse. UEFN (Unreal Editor for Fortnite) is Epic’s full PC editor, with custom models, scripting and the tools creators use for the most-played islands.
To get UEFN, install Fortnite first, then search for Unreal Editor for Fortnite in the Epic Games Launcher and click Download. It runs on PC only and Epic asks for 16 GB of RAM and a graphics card with 4 GB of video memory. Epic’s UEFN setup guide has the full steps.
Stick to islands inside the game. Programs that promise free V-Bucks, unlocked skins, aimbots or modified game files are scams or cheats, and they can get your Epic account banned for good.
