Shift At Midnight is a co-op detective horror game for PC from Bun Muen, available on Steam.
You run the night shift at a gas station, stocking shelves and serving customers. The catch is that some of those customers are not actually human. Miss one and it leaves, then comes back later in the same shift to try to kill you.
Checking customers is what carries the whole game. You look at each customer’s ID, check their details on the store computer, and watch how they act before letting them walk out the door. Get it wrong, and you will be barricading doors and setting traps by the end of the shift.
Shift At Midnight launched on July 22, 2026, on Windows 10 and 11. It plays solo or in co-op with up to 2 friends.

What Is Shift At Midnight?
Shift At Midnight is a co-op detective horror game from Bun Muen, an independent developer, published by Kwalee. You run the night shift at a gas station, keeping the shelves stocked, taking deliveries, and serving customers who show up at random. Every shift is randomly generated, so no two shifts play out the same way.
The twist is that some of your customers are doppelgangers pretending to be human. You have to check their ID, look up their details on the store computer, and watch their behavior before letting them leave, since missing one means it comes back later in the same shift, transformed into a monster. If a creature gets loose in the store, you will need to barricade the doors, lay traps, and find somewhere to hide.
Proximity chat pulls a lot of weight in co-op sessions. You can run the counter solo, or team up with up to 2 friends to split the workload between stocking, serving, and watching the door. The game currently ships with Story Mode, made up of 13 randomly generated shifts, plus character customization options for your gas station worker.

Is This Game for You?
You Will Love It If:
- ✅ You like horror games built around social deduction and observation, not just jump scares
- ✅ You enjoy a management loop (stocking, serving customers) mixed with real tension
- ✅ You want a co-op horror game that supports proximity chat
- ✅ You like replayable, randomly generated sessions over a fixed story
- ✅ You want to try a free demo before committing to the full game
You Might Not If:
- ❌ You want a large group experience, co-op tops out at 3 players total
- ❌ You would rather avoid blood and gore, see the content note above
- ❌ You want deep combat, most encounters are about avoidance and traps, not fighting
- ❌ You want a long single-player campaign, Story Mode is built around short, randomized shifts
- ❌ You want official Steam Workshop mod support, the current mod scene runs through a separate mod loader instead
🎮 Our Take
Shift At Midnight has landed with Very Positive reviews, and the pitch explains why: it takes the tired “spot the impostor” formula and grounds it in a genuinely mundane setting, a gas station counter, which makes the horror hit harder when it finally shows up. Checking IDs is the strongest part of the game, since looking over a customer’s details forces you to actually pay attention instead of just reacting to a jump scare. The tradeoff is scope: co-op caps at 3 players, and the current content is Story Mode’s 13 shifts, with a free Endless Mode update still on the roadmap.
If you like horror that rewards paying close attention and you have one or two friends to run the counter with, this is worth grabbing now, especially since a free demo exists if you want to test it first. If you’d rather wait for Endless Mode to land before committing, keep it wishlisted and check back later.
Shift At Midnight Mods
Shift At Midnight does not have official Steam Workshop support, yet, but a small mod scene has already started on Nexus Mods, mostly focused on raising the game’s 3 player co-op cap.
ShiftMorePlayers
Removes the 3 player lobby cap so the host can set a custom limit. The mod’s own testing found 8 players is a safe recommendation, since some interaction and monster-detection systems are built around the vanilla player count and get unreliable beyond around 10 players. Requires a separate mod loader (BepInEx) and only the host needs it installed.

Tips for Getting Started
Always check the ID before waving a customer off
It is tempting to rush through a busy rush to keep your quota up, but skipping the ID check on even one customer is how a doppelganger slips through.
Assign roles if you are playing with friends
Have one person handle the register and ID checks while others restock shelves and take deliveries. Splitting the workload keeps the shift from feeling overwhelming.
Set traps and plan an escape route before things go wrong
Once a doppelganger gets loose, you will not have time to plan. Keep track of where traps and hiding spots are as you work each shift.
Try the free demo with your usual group first
Since co-op tops out at 3 players, it is worth testing the free multiplayer demo with the exact friends you plan to play with before buying.
Check for updates before a session
Bun Muen ships regular updates, and a free Endless Mode is planned down the line. A quick check before you play can save confusion if something changed since your last shift.
