Microsoft today announced the release of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27891 for users in the Canary Channel, part of its ongoing community testing program for new features and updates. The release also included a Microsoft Store update for participants in the Canary and Dev Channels. Developers attempting to access software development kits (SDKs) for the 27xxx series of builds were informed the company will not release these tools for now, though no timeline was provided for potential future availability.
A major focus of the update is the deprecation of Windows PowerShell 2.0, a legacy scripting tool for system management. Microsoft stated it is removing the tool from the latest Canary builds and plans to provide users with additional details next year. This change aligns with broader efforts to phase out outdated components and encourage transition to newer versions, such as PowerShell 5.1 or the cross-platform PowerShell 7.
Windows 11 users in the Canary Channel received several fixes aimed at improving stability and performance. For example, Microsoft resolved a long-standing issue that prevented the “Reset this PC” option from functioning after recent upgrades. The company also addressed graphical glitches affecting the taskbar’s acrylic material, which had caused unexpected black or white UI elements in some cases. Another improvement fixed a problem where Windows updates occasionally stalled at 2%, and additional adjustments resolved language-specific rendering errors for Vietnamese and Arabic characters in apps like Task Manager.
File Explorer updates include a fix for a dropdown menu issue in the address bar, ensuring accessibility to all folder paths. Settings functionality saw improvements: crashing issues related to microphone properties and Bluetooth settings were addressed, though Microsoft warned of a new bug causing the app to crash when configuring power and battery options. Windowing features were refined, with a correction to the minimize animation display problem introduced in an earlier build.
Task Manager and PowerShell tools received updates to fix performance tracking errors. For instance, the older CPU calculation method was replaced in the Performance page, and a bug that incorrectly reported 0% usage for the System Idle Process in the new CPU Utility column was corrected. Audio issues, such as disabled system sounds for notifications and volume controls, were also resolved, though users must restart after the update for changes to take effect.
A Microsoft Store update (version 22406.xxxx.x) allows new functionality for Insider users. The update enables direct app and game installations from the Store’s homepages in featured sections, reducing steps for users to access new content. Testing this feature includes a request for user feedback via the Feedback Hub application.
Despite these updates, Microsoft highlighted known issues in the latest build. Specifically, Canary Channel users switching from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel, or retail versions to a new Copilot+ PC may encounter errors preventing access to Windows Hello PIN or biometric logins (error code 0xd0000225). The company recommends re-creating the PIN using the “Set up my PIN” option. Additionally, Remote Desktop on Arm64 devices may experience severe graphical distortions, and some users reported crashes in Settings when interacting with the Power & Battery section.
Microsoft reiterated that Canary builds are experimental, emphasizing that features introduced in these updates may not appear in future public Windows 11 releases. The company uses “Control Feature Rollout” to gradually introduce changes, starting with small groups of Insiders, and some features typically first appear in other Insider channels like Dev or Beta. Localization for certain features may also lag, with incomplete language support currently present.
Users are reminded they cannot switch to a lower-numbered build channel without a clean install of Windows 11. The desktop watermark in the lower-right corner remains a standard part of pre-release builds. For tracking which features appear in each Insider channel, Microsoft directs users to its Flight Hub tool.
Microsoft is actively adapting to user feedback, with promised continued updates to enhance user experience across platforms like Azure, Windows, and the Microsoft Store, as well as refining features for compatibility with devices such as Copilot+ PCs.
