ZED ZONE is a top-down zombie survival game for PC from Leven Liu, available on Steam. Your aircraft crashes on a quarantined island full of the infected. You scavenge, craft gear, build a base and fight your way toward a way out.

What sets it apart is how much one person built. ZED ZONE is made by a single developer, and it packs base building, a power grid, farming, 200+ craftable items and a 60+ skill tree into one pixel-art game. You can play it alone or bring up to seven friends along.

Version 1.0 came out on November 5, 2026, after more than three years in Early Access. It runs on Windows 10 and 11 and has full controller support. INDIECN publishes it.

ZED ZONE Price and Editions

ZED ZONE costs $11.99 on Steam. There is one edition and no DLC, so the base game is everything. Co-op, all game modes and the Workshop are included.

Only one person in a co-op group needs to host, but every player needs their own copy of the game.

What Is ZED ZONE?

ZED ZONE opens with a crash. You crawl out of a downed helicopter onto a quarantined island, with zombies, mutants and military robots between you and any way home. Everything you use, you find or make yourself.

The loop is simple to learn. You scavenge towns, bases and labs for supplies, craft gear at workbenches, and build a shelter that keeps you alive at night. Over time that shelter grows into a powered base with generators, turrets, traps and farm plots.

A train with lit windows running on a curved railway through a snowy pine forest, seen from above

Beat an area boss and another stretch of the island railway gets its power back.

The main island is only the start. Repair a boat and you can sail to the Far Island, where ten more areas wait, from a port and a nuclear power plant to an old airport and a military camp. Three area bosses guard the access devices for Area 61, where the story ends with a final boss and an escape.

Four players marked P1 to P4 fighting together inside a dark building, with laser sights crossing the room

Co-op runs up to 8 players, 4 by default, and the host can change that.

Beyond the story, there are two extra modes. Cataclysm Mode traps you on an island with a horde night every five days and timed boss fights every seven. Horde Mode is camp defense: hold off 20 waves around a trader’s RV, alone or with up to three friends, with progress that carries into your next run.

Our Take

🎮 Our Take

ZED ZONE is a lot of game for the price. Three years of Early Access shows: there is a real power grid, a voxel building system, farming, a deep skill tree, companions, two islands and a story that actually ends. The top-down pixel style keeps it readable even when a horde floods the screen. The trade-off is that it is one person’s project, so some systems feel rougher than others, and the first week of 1.0 needed a run of quick patches for co-op bugs such as duplicated items and room codes that would not show up. The developer fixed those fast, which is a good sign, but expect the odd rough edge.

If you like top-down survival games and want something to sink a lot of hours into, alone or with friends, it is an easy pick at this price. If you want cinematic 3D zombie action or a polished big-studio game, look elsewhere. And if you plan to play mostly in big co-op groups, check the latest patch notes first, since multiplayer is the newest part of the game.

System Requirements

ZED ZONE is a light game, and most PCs from the last decade will run it. The minimum spec says Windows XP, but the game is a modern 64-bit build, so plan on Windows 10 or 11. The storage figures are also small next to what the full release takes now, so leave a few GB free.

Tips for Beginners

1

Start a Standard world

New Standard worlds come with a tutorial, and finishing Standard Mode is what unlocks Cataclysm Mode.

2

Keep quiet near hospitals

Dormant Hordes lie on the ground near hospitals and in the wild. Noise or a stray shot wakes the whole group.

3

Rescue a dog early

Look for a dog cage at a Scavenger Camp. Your dog fights beside you, brings back small gifts and never dies.

4

Cook your meals

Food cooked on a stove gives buffs, such as more carry weight from meat and faster healing from fish.

5

Ride the trains

Each area boss you beat powers more of the railway. Trains move you across the island fast and have storage.

Best ZED ZONE Mods to Start With

ZED ZONE supports mods on the Steam Workshop. Subscribe to a mod and Steam downloads it for you, and you can turn mods on and off in the game’s MOD Manager. There is also a built-in MOD Editor for making your own weapons with no coding, covered in the developer’s official mod guide.

In co-op, the host’s data mods sync to every player who joins. These five are a good place to start.

ZED ZONE Code Mod Loader

By star fox

The game’s own mod system handles data mods, such as new items and weapons. This adds BepInEx (a common loader for Unity games) so mods with real code can run too. Run install.cmd once from its Workshop folder, then launch the game from Steam. Its uninstall.cmd puts the game back to normal.

💡 These are fan-made mods, not official ones. Code mods do not sync in co-op, so everyone in the group needs the same ones installed. The loader’s author warns that code mods which change stats or spawn items can get a run flagged on the Cataclysm and Horde leaderboards. A game update can break code mods until you run install.cmd again, and Steam’s Verify Integrity of Game Files option restores the original files.

ZED ZONE FAQ

How do you join a friend in ZED ZONE co-op?
The host opens a room, and you join with its 6-digit room code, from the public room list, through a Steam friend invite or over LAN. Rooms can have a password. If a direct connection fails, the game routes you through the developer’s relay server on its own. The host can open a room on their own single-player save.
Is my progress saved when I play in someone else’s game?
Your character is. Characters are kept apart from worlds, so you can bring your own character, with its backpack, gear and skills, into a friend’s game and take it back out. The world itself belongs to the host, so guests do not save it, and Horde Mode does not save a world either.
Does ZED ZONE have controller support?
Yes. Steam lists full controller support, every menu and panel works with a controller, and you can type text with the Steam virtual keyboard.
Does ZED ZONE have an ending?
Yes. Standard Mode ends in Area 61, with a three-phase final boss and an escape by submersible. You can keep playing your save after the ending, and finishing Standard Mode unlocks Cataclysm Mode.
Is ZED ZONE on Mac, Linux, Epic or GOG?
No. ZED ZONE is a Windows game sold on Steam only. It supports Steam Cloud saves and Steam Family Sharing.
What are the ZED ZONE system requirements?
Steam lists an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3, 2 GB of RAM and a GTX 660 as the minimum, and an Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7, 8 GB of RAM and a GTX 1060 as the recommended spec. The game is a 64-bit build, so plan on Windows 10 or 11 even though the minimum line says Windows XP.
